Marion Gibbons Obituary

Gibbons, Marion (Thomas)
Marion (Thomas) Gibbons, 90 died peacefully on July 3, 2012 at John C, Lincoln Hospital. A registered nurse (Fordham graduate), she was born October 15, 1922 in New York City. She was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Francis Gibbons, and her daughter, Kathy Gibbons Jackson. She is survived by her children, Robert (Cheryl), Thomas, Dorothy McGuinness, Margaret, and Virginia; as well as grandchildren Brian, Ben, and Brandon Gibbons, Ryan and Nathan Gleason, and Juliana and Daniel Dickson. Marion started nursing during World War II and continued into her 70's. She was of the generation of brave women who dared to enter the workforce with a career when most women were at home wives. The original energizer bunny, she managed to work the night shift while raising, with our Dad, 6 kids, whom she was proud of the fact that all went on to earn college degrees, including some masters and a doctorate. Our sister Kathy was an accomplished elite athlete, and Marion loved all those in the track community, especially those who kept in contact with her. We have wonderful memories of many great vacations, celebrations, track meets and living life. Thanks, Mom! We love you so much, and will miss you always. May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Mass will be held at 10am at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 330 West Coral Gables Drive, Phoenix on Thursday, July 11, 2013.

To Dorothy, Margaret, Virginia, Tom, Bob, Ray and all the family - your Mom was an inspiration to me and to all who met her. Getting to know her through Kathy's scholarship at ASU was truly an honor. Today's celebration of her life was very special. All of the songs, readings and prayers were beautiful. Doing your best was her standard expectation and she set the bar high for everyone. That is an admirable way to live, and one that we can all aspire to. My deepest condolences to your family. I will miss your Mom but her spirit will live on...with me and all the students who appreciate the generosity of your family.

I am so sorry I am out of town and will miss your mom's funeral. Our moms were the only college graduates I knew in our neighborhood and so, I think, shared a bond. Your mom was so proud of all of you. I would see her at Mass and ask after you all, and she beamed with pride speaking about you and your accomplishments. Find peace knowing she is at peace!
