Arty, Lucy and I were so sorry to hear of Martel's passing. We were even more sorry that we did not know until after his services. As you know, Martel and I grew up together, and our families were very close. In fact, when Martel's dad died in a car accident, the twins stayed with our family for a few days. I even worked for Martel selling Honda motorcycles for five years at Apache Honda East in Mesa. Where is Dick Cole now? We were close to both of you when we attended the ASU Married Ward when we were all still in school. Martel really surprised me one summer day in San Diego. As I stood soaking in the beach and the waves, a bum came up behind me and asked for money for a hamburger. I started to say no, then I recognized it was Martel, teasing me a bit! He had been there a week or two without shaving! That's how I found out you guys spent some time every summer there! I will always remember the good memories with you guys. I hope you will heal quickly, Arty, we love you even though we don't see you often enough. Love you, Gary and Lucy Richardson

From all of my memories of my teenage years, the Coke Oven overnight was one of my most exciting memories. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime event. Martel was the Teacher’s Quorum Advisor in the 1970’s and he had worked out plans to take his Teacher’s Quorum on a motorcycle trip to the Coke Ovens. He planned it for months and none of us boys in his Priesthood Quorum had any idea what was in store for us. Previously, Martel had taken us out on afternoon motorbike rides but our imaginations soared when we thought about taking motorbikes on an overnight trip, although none of us could ever comprehend how much fun that Coke Oven trip was going to be for us. Because of Martel’s connections with the motorcycle dealership, Apache Honda East, he was able to borrow bikes for every boy to ride. He made an effort to include everyone in the Quorum, and made sure every boy was provided his own motorcycle to ride on the overnight. Martel’s influence and resources was a magnet to all of us, including inactive members of the Aaronic Priesthood Quorum. The trip was the most of the most fantastic events from my teenage memory. We were just teenagers but with the bikes Martel provided, we rode trails, climb hills, splashed in creeks and streams, got muddy in the rain and mud, felt the wind (and sting of hail and snow) in our faces, and experienced a freedom we could never have had, all because of the love, care, friendship, example and charity of Martel.
