Michael McGinnis Obituary

Michael James McGinnis, 49, was born in Phoenix to James Francis McGinnis and Betty Ruth Buie McGinnis. He died on March 3, 2006 after an eleven-year battle with hemochromatosis and, later, cancer. Mike was a happy, athletic, and precocious child who read at the twelve-grade level while only in the fifth grade. He won the Tavan School spelling bee in the eighth grade. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, earning a God and Country Award and served as an acolyte with the Episcopal Church. Early on, his interest in music led him to sing in the Phoenix Boys Choir. Eventually, he became a skilled drummer, receiving a music scholarship to Scottsdale Community College. For years he was the drummer for Coyote, a local country & western band. Later, Mike decided to further his education, graduating with a B.A. in English from ASU with a minor in Spanish. During this time he worked as a bartender at the Tee Pee Restaurant to support himself. Mike was hired by Radio Shack in Las Cruces, NM, where he received management training. He was soon managing a store in El Paso, TX. He worked in this capacity until he became ill and returned to Phoenix in 1997. He returned to Radio Shack and subsequently the Tee Pee for a short time. He became a paralegal but preferred working with young people. This passion led him to teaching English to Spanish-speaking students as a substitute teacher. During his illness and up until the time of his death, he was an independent insurance agent. He loved golf, fishing, camping, horseback riding and being with his dear friends. Mike is survived by his mother, Betty, his father, James, his two sisters, Patricia Boomsma and Susan Lindsay, his nephew and godson, David Patterson, and a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Memorial services will be held at the Lincoln Heights Christian Church at 2121 E. Lincoln Rd. on Mar. 13, 2006 at 6:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.

I first met Mike when he attended Hopi Elemtary in the fourth grade and he teased me like crazy. I 'missed' that until Arcadia High where we met up again as freshmen. We've been friends ever since, like so many others he has touched along the way. Always ready to jump into anything the gang had going (or often to instigate it), always a dear friend when the chips were down. I'll sorely miss our weekend marathon phone talks, your sweet smile and those bright baby blues. My most heartfelt condolences to Betty, Pat, Susie and the rest of his family and friends.

I was in the Arcadia High School band with Mike. He was always friendly and very nice to me. I wasn't able to make it to the 30 year reunion last year, and wish I had. Mike said he'd save a dance for me at that reunion. Now he is dancing with the angels. I am sorry I didn't get to have that dance with Mike. I will always remember him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Mike was always there for me and I was honored to be his friend. I have spent many hours in the past week speaking with many of our mutual friends about Mike’s impact on our lives. Wow, the number of great experiences they shared is truly a testament to his legacy. Although Mike is gone it is clear that he will never be forgotten.

Mike was a person you could call a

true friend. Memories of Mike will

be cherished forever. Skiing the Grand Teatons of Wyoming, fly fishing in Colorado, water skiing & golfing in New Mexico and not to forget rafting down the Salt River.

Working with Mike at Radio Shack and

being a former member of Coyote have been an honor.

Mike loved life and his friends.

How lucky we are to have shared those moments with him.

Dear Susie Pat Betty and Jim My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. To say that I am sorry doesn't begin to express my thoughts, to say that Mike is no longer in pain and he now has angel wings sounds better. So think of Mike doing what he loved most but with no illness or pain surrounding him. I only met Mike a couple of times but what I remeber is his smile. Susie, I love you so much and am so happy that you married my brother and that you are a part of my family forever. Love to you all, Pam

Mike was one of a kind. He always had a big smile and big heart. He never forgot a friend or a face. I’ve known Mike since 5th grade and we kept in solid contact right up to a couple Fridays ago. He made it a point to keep in contact with a very large circle of friends. He was a dear friend to many and will be deeply missed. Our prayers go out to his Mom, Dad, Pat and Suzie.

Being a buddy of Mike's little sister Susie meant some teasing, but that was OK, I expected it. Mike was a funny, happy guy, and seeing his picture as an adult just reminded how much. My love to Mike's mom and sisters Susie and Pat. Hope to see you all soon and I'm so sorry for your loss.
