Reuben Romero Obituary

Reuben Mario Romero Born July 28, 1946 in Tempe, Arizona, Died February 24, 2004. Son of Gabriel and Juanita Romero. Memorial Service on: March 6, 2004 1:00 PM, Memorial Presbyterian Church 4141 E. Thomas Road Phoenix AZ. A potluck celebration of Reuben's life will immediately follow the service. Paperware, coffee and soda will be provided. Reuben surrendered to his longstanding battle with quadriplegia and died peacefully with his nephew, Rick Jr., and his attending physician, Jim Berg, at his side. He was a patient at Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado since April of 2003. During his stay at the hospital, he courageously underwent several surgical procedures to prolong his life. Reuben's attitude regarding his injury and his illness was that he wanted to savor each moment of life until the time when nature would take its course. With this philosophy, Reuben became a medical marvel, surviving his catastrophic injury for 39 years and greatly exceeding all the doctor's expectations. "Out & About with Reuben Romero" is an original variety show designed to inform and inspire the disabled community throughout the world. Developed in 2002 by Reuben and his nephews, Cris and Rick Romero, "Out & About" was the achievement of Reuben's lifelong dream of becoming a disc jockey. On November 26, 2002, the show was the focus of a feature article written by Kenneth LaFave in the Arizona Living section of The Arizona Republic. This article inspired citizens throughout the state, in particular those who shared in Reuben's triumphs over disability. Reuben became seriously ill shortly thereafter, and production was postponed. Reuben returned to the microphone in the Spring of 2003. Despite the immense challenge of performing with a tracheotomy, Reuben recorded his most poignant work from the family education center at Craig Hospital. In the spirit and honor of Reuben and "Out & About," this production will resume championing the rights and opportunities of disabled people everywhere. Reuben lives on in my memories and in the ongoing friendship he made possible for me and his brother Rick, Angie, and the boys. As we come up to the 45th anniversary of the graduation of our Class of '64 from Thunderbird Academy, the wonderful times shared with Reuben are very much in my my thoughts.

Aloha Reuben:
We didn't get to hang out together in Hawaii but I often think of you when I walk the beach. We talked about the whales that visit the islands every year. After you left this life I watched a whale breach from my deck and felt your presence. I miss you and your strength.

Reuben was my first love. I will always treasure the memories of our times together, listening to music, driving up to South Mountain, wheel-chair strolls on the campus of ASU, and tender moments in the moonlight. He will always be loved.

Written on April 1, 2005 upon the restart of "Out & ABout" broadcasts: Dear Reuben, we wish that we could be in paradise (the Big Island of Hawaii) there with you, but for the moment, there is much work here to be done. Now is a time in all of our lives when we are embarking on many new and wonderful journeys. In so many ways, these experiences were inspired and made possible by you. You are always in our hearts and minds, and we promise to make you proud with our efforts. The world is a better place because of you, and we look forward to seeing you in paradise again soon. With love from all of us, Paps, Barp, Mums, Cris, RV, Googs, Dri, Kevin, Megan, and the Plums

Reuben even though we did not meet in the physical we met many life times and in spirit. I know we will talk many times together, as will Rick. There is no limits to time and space. You are up there to guide us on this earth plane. We only need to quiet ourselves and listen to your messages.

Say hello to my brother, Mickey. He's told me that there is a wonderful hunting ground up there.

We all love you and know the love you have for us. Earth times are very challenging for us down here we need all of you angels helping.

Love from the heart

Even though we are "distant" relatives, the Romeros have always held a special place in our lives. We have fond memories of our visits to Phoenix when we were all children, and Reuben has continually been in our thoughts and prayers over the years. His love of life and sense of humor raised all our spirits, and he led a life of courage and dignity while valiantly facing obstacles that would have overwhelmed most of us. We will miss his worldly presence, but he will continue to inspire us from his resting place in God's loving arms.

Reubens passing and his move to a quieter neighborhood is a sad occasion for those of us who have had the honor of being his friend. Through the years when I have experienced physical discomfort and pain, my thoughts were of Reuben's inability to feel what we feel and live life as we have been able to, as we have traveled through the time of our own lives. Reuben has always been an inspiration to me and he will be missed by many. Rest in peace Reuben, and we will all take comfort in the promise that the meek shall inherit the earth. Farewell my friend, Gary

Dear Reuben,

I will miss having you in my life, but I know you are in a much better place. You are finally free of your body...revel in that freedom. I look forwarding to meeting you again in our next lives.

With love,

I am sorry to hear of his death. We can take heart that he is no longer in pain and that in the resurrection we can see him again - in better health and conditions!
