Reyes Ruiz Obituary

Reyes Maria Ruiz Reyes Maria Ruiz was born on April 13, 1933, in the small farming community of Virden, New Mexico, located along the Gila River on the border of the southeastern Arizona. When he was 7 years old, his father, Isidoro, was killed suddenly in an auto accident. Eleven days later his younger and only sister, Helena, died from illness. These early tragedies left Reyes' innocent heart questioning why God would do this to him. Because God had a great plan for Reyes he wanted to begin to heal his heart for the great work Reyes would do later in his life. God sent Reyes a special gift, the love of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. He began to pray the Rosary daily as a young boy. Because of this devotion he would later in life adopt the name of Maria as his middle name. He thereafter referred to the Virgin Mary as his "Mujer Bonita," his beautiful woman. In life when you lose in one area you gain in another; Reyes had six of his grandparents still alive and all of them left a loving and prayerful impression on him. Their influence would form his prayer life permanently. Reyes loved education; however another early tragedy would end his schooling early. At the age of 11, Reyes' legs were badly burned and he recuperated at home for almost a year. He had also lost a year of schooling when his father and sister died. At the age of 16 he was forced to quit school and begin to work to help out his mother, Cruz and younger brother, Fernando. Several years later he volunteered for military service and served in the Korean War. One Christmas Eve, he was in a bunker and asked the "Mujer Bonita" to be with him. He felt the sudden urge to move and just seconds later his bunker was destroyed by enemy bombing. After military service Reyes returned home to work. He learned the craft of a bricklayer and he quickly surpassed the skills of his teacher. He then married the second love of his life, Estela Aguilera Ruiz, who shared the same heart and the same last name. He was attracted to her innocence and purity as a woman. They soon married and had their first child Isidoro "Lolo", and then quickly followed the twins, Fernando and Armando. Reyes brought his young family to Phoenix, in search of work. He soon built a house in South Phoenix and settled in to raise a family. Later would arrive his oldest daughter Maria Rebecca "Becky", Reyes Jr., and Rosa Maria "Rosie". Several years after arriving in Phoenix Reyes attended the "Cursillo," an intense 3-day course on God. His already developed prayer life would reach new heights. He began attending Mass at Saint Catherine's Parish and he became a daily communicant for the next 43 years. He also began a small construction business, which would feed his family and teach his children how to work. Reyes valued education, so he sent all of his children to Catholic schools and universities. Reyes said that when his sons went off to the university it was a difficult transition for him because they were his best friends. During this time he discovered his talent as an artist and joined the "MARS" group (Movimiento Artistico del Rio Salado). During this time he also became the guardian of a neighbors baby boy, Tony Valverde and raised him as his own, he would do the same later with grandson Sergio Castillo. When his children returned from university he supported them in their passion for community service. One of his sons served 10 years in the Arizona State Legislature with his final 2 years in the State Senate. Reyes became accustomed to having dignitaries, leaders, and famous people visit his home including: Senator Dennis DiConcini, Congressman Ed Pastor, Governor Fife Symington, Secretary of HUD Mel Martinez, State Senator Alfredo Gutierrez, County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox and her husband Earl, State Representative Art Hamilton; political activists Cesar Chavez, Tommy Espinoza, Danny Ortega, School Superintendent Lisa Graham Keegan and sports personalities Steve Young, Dave McGinnis, Jim Brown, Larry Wilson, and Bill Bidwell, and religious leaders as well; Bishops Thomas O'Brien, Jose Ignacio Alemany, Peru, Paul Bimile, Ghana; business leaders Bill Shover, Dick and Alice Snell, and Art Othon. Reyes felt equally at ease among the elite as with the poorest of the poor. He would work 15 years for the Phoenix Catholic Diocese in the Migrant Ministry Program. He would see to the spiritual needs of poor migrant families working in the fields surrounding Phoenix. Later his love of education would lead him to found and open a charter school with his wife and children. He toiled many years in the sun building the school with his blood, sweat, and tears. Many children and their families affectionately knew him as "Grandpa Ruiz." The school would later confer to him an honorary high school diploma, which he greatly coveted. His love of God also would move him to found "Mary's Ministries," an international evangelization ministry. This love of his would take him to 46 states, and almost 50 countries. The ministry currently is based in Chile, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, the United States, England, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, India, and Japan. He also referred to those who worked with him as his spiritual children, those not born to him biologically, but "born to him from the Blood of Christ". He was affectionately known as "Papa Reyes", the spiritual father for thousands in many countries. Reyes Maria Ruiz died a holy death in his home at 1:07 am, on Sunday July 27, 2003. His wife, mother, children, brothers and sisters, his spiritual children, and many friends surrounded him. The world will miss his holy example. His Rosary will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 6401 South Central Avenue, on Friday August 1st at 7:00 pm, with Mass and an all night vigil at his home, 30 E. Cody Drive. The funeral Mass will be Saturday at 9:30 am at his home. Internment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery at noon with a reception at Reyes and Estela's home from 2:00 to 7:00 pm, followed by a Rosary. Arrangements entrusted to Universal Sunset Chapel.

Dearest Estela and Family,

You have been my friends for many years and my love for you goes deep. I cannot change your sorrow, but I share it. Even more, I share your great joy that after all these years of waiting, Reyes is finally HOME!

The years of Bible studies in the back room with Fr. Doug, the Rosaries at the Shrine, the Course in Evangelization, and having Reyes speak from his heart in such a way that he showed us the Heart of Jesus....all those things bonded us in ways the world can never know.

The Cross he made for me with his own hands is always here on my desk, a physical reminder of the LOVE that you all share in the name of Our Lord and Our Lady.

I love you so much and hold you close in my heart and prayers.

Dear Estela and family, A dear friend and holy woman, Bea, was the first to notify me of Sr. Reyes' passing. She and I were blessed to have been at that very special Mass for Sr. Reyes celebrated by Fr. Ruiz just a few weeks before. It was a beautiful, holy and miraculous experience. Another holy woman, a dear friend of mine who went to heaven 5 years ago next month, was who brought me in touch with your family, through the holy gatherings for rosary and sharing of our Blessed Mother Mary's messages through you, many years ago. Although we came to your garden many times to pray I met Sr. Reyes when he came to the hospital to visit my beloved friend "Quetita". That is where I met him personally. I learned of his great love and devotion to our Mother from my friend who also had a great devotion to Our Lady and then by the witnessing of how you, Sr. Reyes and all your family have been touched by Jesus through His Mother. When I learned of his passing I rejoiced for him and my first thought was that my "Quetita" would be among the many residents of heaven welcoming this "saint" home. I have been praying that God continue to bring comfort, joy and peace to you. I know that your faith is great and that although you all will miss your dear husband, father and tata in his physical presence you will be comforted by his spiritual presence. I was deeply touched and inspired by "For the Soul of the Family" and I have been asking Sr. Reyes' intercession in heaven for my sons' return to the Church, to the sacraments, to holiness, to God. I am confident that he will work for a miracle of faith in my family. God bless you Estela, your sons, daughters & grand children. God is good!

Dear Ruiz Family,

Although I just recently met you, you immediately made me feel welcome and loved. For that I am truly thankful. Reyes is an inspiration in living and in faith. Within a few minutes of meeting him, I was immediately told I was his spiritual child and then given advice about my life and my faith. All of this from a hospital room, an experience that left me feeling humbled and loved.

I realized Reyes knew me before I walked in the room and had been praying for me right along. Without my complete awareness, he had been offering up his suffering, and he said he would continue to do so for me. His smile and genuine love for me cracked my heart.

My love and prayers go out to the Ruiz family, especially Estela, who like Reyes, took this spiritual waif in too.

Love,

Lynn

Mrs. Ruiz, Isidore, Armando, Fernando, Becky, Rosie, and Rey Jr., please accept my condolences and prayers in the loss of your husband and father. I remember Mr. Ruiz always had a smile for all of us kids at St. Catherine's, and behind the smile was the discipline and/or words of wisdom. I lost touch with the Ruiz family after grade school, but it is evident by all of his accomplishments that he continued to be the caring and loving person I remember. He has touched a lot of people's lives, and will be dearly missed.

Querida Estela y Familia:

."Duc in altum" ( naveguen mar adentro)

Abrazos y recuerden que los quiero mucho....

Gracias por ser mis amigos.

Dear Family,

Thank you for sharing everything with all of us. Everyone in the village is sad today. We cry and our hearts ache. Yet, we are so full of joy and happiness. We ask how we can hold such opposite emotions? Because you have taught all of us so well.

I thank you for my dear dogs Lobo and Skylark that came from Dutchess.

I thank you for the gift of flight which will be returned to your son Fernando.

I thank you for taking me "in" and teaching me how to be a "champion" for Jesus and His Mother.

I thank you for trusting me to bring you back the most beautiful rosary from Medjugorje.

Thank you - I love you with ALL of my heart.

Dearest Estela, We are so sad to hear of the loss of your Sweetheart and the love of your life. Our hearts and prayers go out to you and your entire beautiful family in this difficult time of loss and grief. Each and every one of you touched our lives in profound ways that we can never forget or ever thank you for enough. Estella and family, even though we are deeply saddened for you and for us that Reyes has left this earthly home, we also cannot help but smile as we so vividly picture him in his Eternal Home ... at last ... with his Beloved Mother Mary, and his Beloved Jesus of the Eucharist. We know that those thoughts will bring some comfort to you in your sorrow. Reyes, we love you so much. We will miss knowing that you are here fighting the good fight for us. But now we know you will be fighting for us in Heaven. We have a Saint on our side, whispering in Mary's ear on our behalf ... and kneeling before Jesus on our behalf. Thank you for giving so much of yourself to all of us while you were here. Enjoy now your just reward.

Estela and family ... know how much we love you. You will ALL be in our prayers.

Grandpa- WOW! In the newspaper you look so handsome. I'm having a really hard time letting go, I know I had the chance to live with you and see you day in and day out. Sergio is having a really hard time with you passing away. Grandpa I just want you to know that you have brought the strength out of me and made me realize what our relationship is really about. Love! I know I have wanted to run and never turn my back, but you and Grandma were the first ones to stop me and let me know everything will work out. A week before you went I remember having a converstation with Grandma and at that time you were pretty sick and I needed advice about Serg and you asked me whole bunch of questions. I'll never forget our converstations we had. For all the people out there that never met this great man that I can call my Grandfather, he was truley something special and one day you will get to meet him. Grandpa I really wished that you could have made it for another month to see the new baby Xavier, at least Little Sergio knows who his Grandpa is. It was hard to see him walk into your bedroom and look for your bed with you in it and turn around and looked confused "like where is Grandpa". I know you are in a better place and you have been wanting to go, but it is hard to not have you here. Waking up saying "Good moroning" or "Good Night". I just want you to know how much you have touched my life and thank you for welcoming me in as one of your own. I LOVE AND MISS YOU SO MUCH! AND I KNOW YOU ARE WHISPERING IN MY EAR NOW "I LOVE YOU MORE KID!"
