Richard Allegretti Obituary

Richard Allegretti

Phoenix - Richard Allegretti was born on December 5, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois to Adeline and Anthony Allegretti. He passed away on February 13, 2018. His family moved from Chicago to Burbank, California after WWII where he attended John Burroughs High School and Glendale Community College. Richard was an outstanding Athlete. His longstanding high school record of 19.8 in the low hurdles and his Burbank All City Decathlon Championship won him an athletic scholarship to the University of Arizona where he received his BA in psychology. While working on his master's degree at USC, Richard taught at Saint Genevieve High School where he coached the Cross Country team to break three Olympic League records and win the league championship. Shortly after graduating from the U of A, Richard married Yvonne Edwards in 1964. In 1967, Richard and his wife moved to Phoenix where he became a guidance counselor at Camelback High School. For 30 years he was a constant source of support to the students, faculty and staff and the community. Richard was "quite a guy" - very professional, extremely caring, well respected, humorous, generous, well-liked by the faculty, students and parents and was an amazing friend. He continued his love of sports by surfing, playing basketball, golf, hand ball and skiing with his family and friends. He also participated in community events such as five and 10K runs. In addition to sports, Richard loved to travel. He visited many places in the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska, Canada, Italy, France, England, Germany and Spain. Richard is survived by his wife, Yvonne, a niece Laura Timpson (Corry) of Nevada, three nephews, Paul Graber (Michelle) of California, Tony Graber of California and Michael Richards (Theresa) of Missouri. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Nicole, and two sisters, Anne Richards and Dolly Allegretti-Graber. The family requests any donations be made to Hospice of the Valley

Mr. Allegretti was my guidance counselor (so many years ago). In my 30s I had the rare opportunity to get to know him a bit as an adult when we ran into each other donating plasma. He was a kind, dedicated, smart man with a golden heart. Thank you for sharing him with all of us.
