Richard Lehman Obituary

Dr. Richard A. Lehman, 31, of Brookline, MA, formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, died at his home on Thursday, November 11, 2004 from acute myelocytic leukemia. A graduate of Shadyside Academy in Pittsburgh, he was also a graduate of Pennsylvania State University, University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and School of Public Health in the D.M.D. and M.P.H. degree programs, respectively. Frustrated by the lack of test preparation material available during his review for the DAT, Dr. Lehman assembled a team of professors, dentists, dental students and other individuals to write the first complete test preparation book specifically for the DAT. As contributing editor of the official ASDA Handbook: A Resource Guide for Predental Students, he had considerable insight into the concerns of the dental school applicant. He was the president of his dental school class and held a national ASDA leadership position on the Editorial Board. He was actively involved in the pursuit of knowledge through research. His memberships included the Author's Guild, National Institute of Dental Research (NIDR), Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity and the American Association of Dental Students (ASDA). In his free time, he enjoyed skiing, cycling and running. He is survived by his wife, Sneha (Parikh) Lehman, his father Jerry Lehman of Boca Raton, FL. and his mother Clare (Heller) Lehman of Scottsdale, AZ, formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, sisters Suzanne Khalil, Julie Lehman, and brother Jonathan Lehman. He was also the grandson of Sol & Ethel Ruben of Pittsburgh, PA. and the late Rabbi Jacob & Leah Lehman. Services at The Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline, MA. on Sunday, November 14 at 1:00pm. Interment at Beit Olam Cemetery, Wayland, MA. Remembrances may be made to the Dr. Richard A. Lehman Memorial Foundation, 77 Marion Street, Apt. #212, Brookline, MA. 02446.

Richard was my closest and dearest friend for the first 7-8 years of our lives. We were born 2 days apart(we used to say our moms were holding hands at West Penn Hops when we were born).
If Richard wasnt at my house we were at his. Especially after the pool was done. We swam forever it seemed like back in those years.
I will miss you Richard.
Condolences to Sheha. Clare. Jerry. Susie. Jon and Julie too.

When somebody dies, a cloud turns into an angel, and flies up to tell God to put another flower on a pillow. A bird gives the message back to the world, and sings a silent prayer that makes the rain cry. People disappear, but they never really go away. The spirits up there put the sun to bed, wake up grass, and spin the earth in dizzy circles. Sometimes you can see them dancing in a cloud during the day time, when they're supposed to be sleeping. They paint the rainbows and also the sunsets and make waves splash and tug at the tide. They toss shooting stars and listen to wishes. And when they sing windsongs, they whisper to us, don't miss me too much. The view is nice and I'm doing just fine.

In memory of a great man.

A knock at the side door, a smile at the window, and Rich was over for a visit. We were always glad to see him. He'd come in, laugh and talk with us whether or not Assaf was home. A great friend to Assaf, he meant a lot to all our family. We will miss him. Our thoughts are with you.

We have known Rich from high school and we welcomed his many visits to our home to visit Assaf. One day I came downstairs and was pleasantly surprised to find Rich sitting alone in our family room. I asked how he entered the house and he said he used the key in the rock from the backyard! He was a terrific friend of Assaf and we will miss him.

"Remember" by Christina Rossette (1834-90)

"Remember me when I am gone away,

Gone far away into the silent land;

When you can no more hold me by the hand,

Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.

Remember me when no more day by day

You tell me of our future that you planned:

Only remember me; you understand

It will be late to counsel then or pray.

Yet if you should forget me for a while

And afterwards remember, do not grieve:

For if the darkness and corruption leave

A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,

Better by far you should forget and smile

Than that you should remember and be sad."

Rich's spark is now a star in the sky. Sending warm thoughts of strength and comfort,

Deb (and big wet kisses from Sam)

Dear Sneha and Richard's Parents,

You have my deepest sympathy during this sad and difficult time. Richard will always be one of my favorite dental students because of his positive attitude, his dedication, and intelligence. I remember when he was working very industriously on a dental handbook for dental students to use as a reference, and I was reviewing the content for him and Sean Gill. His passion and creativity for the project was excellent. I am sorry for your loss.

I AM NOT THERE ~ Hopi Indian prayer

Do not stand at my grave and weep;

I am not there. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn's rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush

of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry;

I am not there, I did not die.
