Russell E. Pomeroy of Mesa passed away on January 31, 2016, at age 88 after a lengthy battle with dementia. Mr. Pomeroy, son of the late Rev. Howard and Mildred (Clifford) Pomeroy, was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Gladys (duBell) and his son Stephen. Mr. Pomeroy is survived by his remaining children Janet (Gary) Ochterbeck, Martin Pomeroy, and Carol (Robert) Bird, and by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. After graduating from Boston Latin School, Mr. Pomeroy enlisted in the US Army and served in the Signal Corps from 1946 through 1952, stationed in numerous locations in Europe and the Far East. He was awarded the Bronze Star in 1951 in Korea. Following his military service, Mr. Pomeroy graduated magna cum laude from Boston University in 1955, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Alpha Theta. Mr. Pomeroy's long career with AT&T Long Lines Department as a District Manager enabled him and his family to live in eight states. An assignment to build and run a Data Center brought him to Mesa in 1984. He served as the Director of the Phoenix Chapter of the Data Processing Management Association in 1984. He was awarded the key to the City of Mesa in 1987. Following his retirement from AT&T, Mr. Pomeroy was a consulting partner with the Prisma Group. He was also an active member of the Leisure World Lions Club, where he served as President in 2000-2001. Russ Pomeroy's life was all about communication. Always a talker and a storyteller, his children often said he could pontificate at length on any topic at any time. Only in his final illness was his ability to communicate diminished, and even then he was still charming, still a talker. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, at 11:00am at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel, 7900 East Main, Mesa, AZ 85207. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Pomeroy's memory may be sent to the Leisure World Lion's Club.
