Dear Carlson family and friends,
I just came across this and am so sorry to hear of Sean's passing. My hiking partner and I encountered Sean on the Arizona Trail in late April 2016 and in the short time we spent with him he made a significant impact on us. We encountered him several times on the trail over a span of about 7 days, but we got to know him during our rest stop at the LF Ranch near Payson AZ. We spent the better part of two days and nights with him at the ranch including an eventful resupply trip into the town of Payson. In that short time I felt I got to know him fairly well. He was such an open, honest person. He shared with us some of the challenges life had thrown at him but it didn't take more than a few minutes to see he was an extremely intelligent, caring, polite person, and had deep spiritual feelings about the journey of life. In the words of my hiking partner, Sean represented to us everything we considered to be the quintessential life on the trail.
I kept a daily journal of our AZT adventure, and I'd like to share with you an excerpt from my entry on the night of Sunday April 24th, our first night at the LF Ranch. These were my impressions of Sean after spending one afternoon & evening with him: He's extremely polite, honest and courteous to everyone he meets. But life threw a few challenges at himhad health issues, and lost his job in insurance due to a downsizing. I get the sense he felt he needed to do something big to change his direction. So he had his father drive him to the AZT trailhead at the Mexico border, and just started hiking. He's been on the trail for almost a month and has a full bushy beard to show for it. Clearly a strong and resourceful guy, such an interesting guy, very open, easy to talk to. Traits I'd like to emulate. I hope he finds his way to peace and happiness.
Unfortunately I didn't get any good pictures of him. I did upload one photo of the bunk house at the ranch, Sean is sitting on a couch on the porch in this photo. All you can see is his silhouette. I think he had just finished inhaling two packages of beans with a wooden spoon right out of his cooking pot. I sincerely hope these thoughts and memories from two lives that Sean impacted in a memorable way will bring you a smile. I am so sorry for your loss, and know that he is tackling the toughest hikes heaven has to offer.

Jerry and Monica and family- My heart is heavy with sadness for you- I'm sure you are feeling so empty - please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. Sean was an incredible human being who lived life to the fullest. I read through his Facebook post and was so intrigued and impressed on his insight into the world. AND what an accomplishment in completing the trail. He loved you so - I'm sure it was a remarkable homecoming when he got to be with his beloved brother in heaven. We love you- stay strong knowing that you will see them both again.Love Patty (Kessler) and Barry Moore and family

To the Carlson Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
