Sherman Axel Memoriam
73, of Tempe, passed away on June 5, 2014. Sherman was born on November 4, 1940, in Madison, Wisconsin and moved to Tempe, Arizona with his family in 1946. Sherman was a graduate of Arizona State University and the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Sherman served as a medical officer in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After medical school and his time in the Army, Sherman returned to Tempe to practice as a radiologist. He retired from the practice in 2000. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Diane Harrison, daughter Jennifer Axel, son Erik Axel and his loving dogs Spike, Mac, Stryder, Lenny and Marlow (who loved him the most because he gave them the most treats). Almost all that met Sherman remembered him for his unique personality, distinctive laugh and always his wicked honesty. He never failed to make you laugh, whether with his sharp wit or insightful insights regarding the world around him. A celebration will be held for Sherman at Casey Moore's Oyster House at 850 S. Ash Ave., Tempe, Arizona 85251 at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2014. Burial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Phoenix Zoo, attention Rebecca Zadarski, 455 North Galvin Parkway, Phoenix, Arizona 85008.

I just learned of Sherman passing. He and
I were great friends, playing golf on the
weekends with my dad and his. I am saddened greatly.

Matt and I will greatly miss running into Sherman at Riazzi's. Matt recalls days of toiling up 'A' Butte on his afternoon walk and running into Sherman on his way down - he was an inspiration.

Sherman and I became fast friends at Tempe High when Coach Younger banged our heads together for talking in class. We lost touch after high school...It was certainly my loss. I have always missed his wit; I miss him now.
