Sylvia Mellott Obituary

Mellott, Sylvia H.
86, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away quietly, after her final bout with cancer on Sunday, April 26, 2009. Born on July 4th 1923 to Sam and Martha Hosler in Conesville/Coshocton, Ohio, Sylvia grew up in Ohio and graduated from high school. She attended business school until 1943 when she moved "out west" to Winslow, Arizona. There she contributed to the war effort while working for the Santa Fe railroad. In 1945 she met and married recently returning bomber pilot, Lt. David Edwin Mellott. During her working career Sylvia served as a secretary and personal assistant to Bishops Arthur Kinsolving, Joseph Harte and the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona. She also worked as church secretary for Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and as secretary/bookkeeper for Accountant Boyd Fletcher and engineer/ realtor Guy Stillman. In later years, Sylvia became an active member of Mended Hearts and called on patients at St. Joseph's Hospital who were about to have cardiac bypass surgery. She was known to say, "If this 5'3" little old lady can go through this kind of surgery twice, then you should have no problem." She served on the Board of Directors and Resident's Council for the Beatitudes Campus, where her spunk, humor and joy for life and human interaction landed her the title of "Goodwill Ambassador" for the new Beatitudes Campus Promenade. Sylvia is survived by her son David E. Mellott and his wife Michele; grandchildren Erica and Bill Davis of Spring Creek, Nevada, and Sam, Anne and Faith Mellott of Phoenix. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Abigail and Brianna Davis of Spring Creek, Nevada, and by nieces and nephews Rev. Carol and Rev. Sam Hosler and family of Kearney, Arizona, Martha Ahrens and family of Strawberry, Arizona, Doug Ruby and family of Groton, Massachusetts, John Ruby and family of Reno, Nevada, and by Jeff Farrell and family of Carlsbad, California. There are also many, many extended family members with whom Sylvia had special relationship that meant so much to her. Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband Lt. Col David Edwin Mellott (AFRES Ret.), brother Odyth Hosler of Strawberry, Arizona, and her parents Sam and Martha Hosler of Sedona, Arizona. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 30th in the Life Center of the Beatitudes Campus,1610 West Glendale Avenue in Phoenix. Parking and a complimentary shuttle to the service will be available from the Church of the Beatitudes parking lot located at the northwest corner of 7th Avenue & Glendale Avenue from 9:30 a.m. A light meal and reception will follow the service. I'm so sorry for your family's loss, and you all and Sylvia are in my prayers. I loved Sylvia. She always treated me like a long-lost pal, and it was so much fun chatting with her and hearing her perspective on life. The 4th of July will never be the same.

Sylvia was a wonderful lady, and a great friend. I served as President of the Beatitudes Auxiliary for several years, Sylvia was President of the Residence Council and we became friends, immediately. Our lost, but her gain into heaven. Many fond memories.
