Wayne Winn Obituary

Wayne F. Winn, M. D. once made a hole in one on the famous 7th hole at Pebble Beach. He would have wanted that disclosed and out of the way right up front. Dr. Winn passed away at the age of 84 on May 27, 2008. He was an extremely devoted husband, father and friend. We couldn't and wouldn't have changed a thing about him. Born in Elroy, Wisconsin on January 12, 1924, Dr. Winn moved to Phoenix in 1949 to begin his medical internship at St. Joseph's Hospital after graduating from University of Wisconsin Medical School. That same year, he met Barbara Mettler, his loving and equally devoted wife of 58 years. After a stint in the military and time in Korea, daughter Diana and son Wayne, Jr., came along. After nearly 20 years in his general medical practice, Dr. Winn chose a new direction in medicine when he began a new residency in psychiatry, continuing and finally concluding his practice within this specialty after another 20 years. After he retired from private practice in 1986, Dr. Winn began yet another career in medicine with the State Department of Economic Security, performing disability analysis for social security until just recently. No matter which portion of his career, Dr. Winn was uiniformly respected and admired by colleagues, peers, and co-workers alike. As indicated, he was an avid golfer, stubbornly trying to master the game for most of his adult life. We always gave him credit for trying!! He was never as accomplished at golf as he was as a family man. Here, he was flawless, to our great fortune. Dr. Winn was predeceased by his older brother, Warren in 2005, and is survived by his wife, Barbara, daughter, Diana Winn Butitta (Matthew) and son, Wayne, Jr. (Cheryl). We will miss him. There will be no public service; however, the family certainly appreciates the thoughts of those who knew him. Arrangements entrusted to A.L. Moore Grimshaw Mortuary.

Oh, what a loss for all! Dr. Winn was one of the funniest and kindest people I have ever met. By far my favorite member at Arizona Country Club. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the of the Winn's.

My Osso Buco Buddy.
I surely will miss you. You know us capricorns always at work. No matter what Albert said to you when he waited on you and Mrs. Winn, I knew you didn't need my brain for science project! My love to all and you're in our prayers.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Winn's family. I had the honor of playing golf with Dr. Winn and Wayne at the Arizona Country Club many years ago. I haven't stopped chuckling since. He was a wonderful gentleman who will be missed.

I am very saddened by the loss of Dr. Winn and offer my condolences to his family. Dr. Winn was my doctor during and after my pregnancy with my daughter who was 46 years old this month. I found him to be one of the kindest, caring and the most gentle doctor I had ever known and I haven't been fortunate enough to have had a doctor that could compare with Dr. Winn since that time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
