I only found this story about Billy today, and am excruciatingly saddened to have done so. Bill was a great friend of mine from way back in grade school, in New York City. I was devastated to hear of his untimely passing. My heart goes out to his entire family, with his mother Marge, brother Kenny and wife Jackie and their boys (whom I only met once)
Please accept my condolences on a friend who will surely be missed by many!

WHY I CRY
Many people pass through our life
Leaving foot prints as they go,
But what matters most are those that
Leave the heart prints on our soul.
You were my friend, my family,
Yet mere mortals you and I.
You left your mark, then left my world,
That's why today I cry.

Jackie, William, Ryan and Matthew.
I was out of town when I received the news about Bill and wished so much I could have been at his memorial. Bill was not only a great co-worker while I was stationed in PHX & ATL but also a true friend that we all will miss very much. Bill was one of few people I knew that always made you smile and laugh and I will cherish those memories forever as I am sure you will too. Having lost my wife to cancer also, I truly understand what all of you may be experiencing and want you to know that if you need any assistance of any type please do not hesitate to contact me and I mean that. All of you will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Please accept my sincere condolences.
Love,

Jackie, William, Ryan, Matthew, Kenny, Cathy, children and Dearest Mom. I am deeply saddened by the news Dad Sweeney gave me today of Bill's illness and passing. I was truly shocked and the words taken from me.
I will never forget the hansom Irish man who was so full of life, laughter and good times. I met him in 1979 at UA with his dear brother, Kenny. Destiny would have us meet Bill and Kenny again ASU in 1980. They were close friends and in my wedding party in 1983. I have not seen the Bill and Kenny in many years, but they left Heart Prints on me and everyone whoever met him. My heart goes out to MUM, I miss you dearly. Hugs and kisses and I am so sorry I missed seeing everyone. Party in Heaven Bill, play cards and Drink with your Dad and my dad -- you are all ANGELS that will be forever missed. Love Always, Val

Jackie and boys, I was truly saddened of of hearing of your loss. There are no words to take away the pain and sorrow you feel. Just know Bill was a wonderful person and left a footprint on all the hearts he touched. I worked with Bill at American Express and really never met anyone so focused on his work while he was there. All his co-workers benefited from having them in their lives. As everyone has already said, he loved his family and it was more than evident in conversing with him. Take time to remember all the great times you and the boys had with this amazing man and hold those memories in your heart. Trust me it will help you through this. When you think of something funny he did or said, you'll smile. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I had the pleasure of working with Bill and never will forget his amazing confidence and humor that I appreciated daily. He was always one to have a good suggestion and truly cared about people. He was always showing how proud he was of his family and know this was his true inspiration.

Jackie, William, Ryan and Matthew.
As we go through our time on this world people enter and leave our lives like they enter and leave our homes, always leaving behind fingerprints, foot prints and smudges. And it seems as soon as they leave, we get out the polish and the rags and remove the marks they leave behind and all too soon their visit is forgotten. And then every so often someone special walks into our lives. He does not leave fingerprints or smudges; he leaves “Heart Prints”. Indelible marks that remain with us forever, marks that we do not want to remove, moments in our lives that we do not want to forget, thoughts and memories that we cherish in a very deep personal way. Bill left such marks. His incredible enthusiasm for life was infectious. His passion and pride for being a Dad, the kind that all men want to be, his incredible devotion to his Mum, the son that I suspect every mother wanted, and his love for his wife, his best friend, his soul mate. What made him so special was that everyone that knew him got to know his whole family without sometimes actually meeting them. His incredible contagious Irish pride made him stand out in a group. He touched so many lives by the example he chose to be. I had the good fortune to work with him while I was based in PHX. Every day he showed up for work, gave cause for a smile, no matter what may be happening. He will be missed by so many.
Jackie, I am sorry I do not know the words to stop the tears or make the pain go away. I can’t explain why things happen the way that they do. But please know that all of you will be in our thoughts and prayers until such time as you find comfort in the happy and wonderful memories that you have of Bill.
Please accept our sincere condolences.
Love

Dear Mrs. Fleming, William, Ryan and Matthew
I will always remember your husband and father for his kindness and enthusiasm as Ryan's and my daughter, Elizabeth Stevens, soccer coach at Pueblo Elementary. He was so patient with all the children and eager to keep the them motivated and having fun. I was saddened to hear of your loss and pray that God will comfort you with his grace and understanding that Bill is with the angels and God's heavenly chorus looking over you, his beloved family.

Jackie and boys,
The words that sprung to mind when I first heard the news were "genuine" and "authentic" - that was Bill. What a very special man he was. I worked with him at American Express, and I can honestly say he was one of the best. I had the privilege of visiting with him recently when he returned to work late last summer. We had a nice visit, and I could tell he was at peace even though he had a fight ahead of him.
May you and the boys be comforted in the days to come in your many, many warm memories of Bill and your life together.

Wow. This is truly a very sad day for me. Although I have not seen or spoken to Bill in over 2 years now, I will never forget his kindness or his sense of humor. In my over 25 years in call centers, Bill was, IMO, the best leader I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. No one was ever as understanding, easy to talk to, or more fair in how he dealt with everyone that Bill was. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family and all who knew him. I am a better person for having known him, and I am profoundly saddened by his passing.

God Bless you all. Please know we are praying for all of you. My son "Alec" was blessed to have Bill as a coach. May you all find peace and remember the good times. Know that Bill is looking over all of you - he's now your angel at peace. We will continue to pray. May God give you all the strength you need to make it through each day.

Bill was the ultimate example of positive; giving it your all and laughing all while traveling the worst of circumstances. (As Bill would say, no let’s just call it what it is, going through Hell, followed by the most infectious laugh) The dedication and example of his love for Jackie and his boys will stay with us forever. There could only be one reason Bill was called home so early, he was needed to accomplish something even greater than we can imagine. Because of who Bill was I feel without a doubt he will be there every moment for his family. I am so blessed to have known Bill and called him friend.

I knew Bill at American Expres, where he was my Team Leader, my mentor, my friend, and confidant. Bill was truly one of the best! Faithful friend, compassionate leader, comforting confidant. He was always there for me when I needed him....and always there to challenge me to be the best that I can be. Endearing sense of humor. and a happy smile, a love for good Irish Cream coffee...and a joy to work with. Bill, you will be truly missed. It was an honor to work with you. I send many prayers and much positive white healing light to Jackie and the boys. And I have added you all to my prayer list.
Bill, thank you for being my friend.

I was stunned to hear of Bill's untimely death. As a Delta co-worker my memories go back to before he hired on with Delta and he worked for Sky Chef catering. After joining our work force it became evident that he had gifts and skills that would place him in positions of higher responsibility. I have many memories of Bill at Delta (too many to mention) and of his confidence in me when he became my supervisor. I always admired his ability to deal with criticism and meet challenges head on. I considered Bill a good friend.
You have my deepest sympathy. My prayers will be with you.

Bill was one of the good guys. He was ALWAYS there for his employees. He made work fun, if that is possible. Even when I was no longer in his department, he still offered me advice and encouragement. He was not only a supervisor, he was a mentor and I am priveledged to say, a friend. I will miss you, Bill! With deepest sympathy, Diane Ponzo

I was fortunate enough to work with Bill at Delta and most recently at American Express. We managed our respective departments at Sky Harbor and for the past few months worked together in the Quality Service Center for Business Travel at Amex. How lucky am I to have known such a wonderful man!! He was instrumental in my transfer to Phoenix, he is the reason I am a team leader at Amex and why I am at QSC today. I owe him a lot. He often spoke about his family and how much he loved his wife Jackie. A love like that is very precious. My friend Bill was valiant--he was my champion, I love him and I miss him. He will always have a special place in my heart. luas Dia

I can only say that, unfortunately, I did not know Bill well. But I know that his contagious laughter and ability to light up a room---is identical to his brother Kenny. Kenny and I have been firefighter friends for many years, and I have prayed for Bill and his family since knowing of his illness last year, while fighting my own cancer. My continued prayers go with the Fleming family, as I know all to well, how tragedy can strike quickly. I am constantly reminded of the laughter and joy that the Flemings bring into the room; and into the life of others! Continued prayers for forever support to his wife, children, and the rest of the Fleming family!

When I think of Bill, it is easy to name many wonderful qualities. Bill was a man who others could look up to and think positive thoughts. He was an honest man, a man who reached others; he was sensitive, humorous, intelligent, thoughtful, a lover of beauty without being extravagant; he was a man who could move forward, even after setbacks. I will always think of him as fair and kind.

I worked with Bill for many years at the Sky Harbor airport. It was always entertaining to listen to his hilarious stories and his laughter was contagious. He was a good man and will be sorely missed by all whose lives he touched.
Please accept my deepest sympathies

Bill was a fellow co-worker at Delta Air Lines in Phoenix, AZ. We lost touch through the years. But, I will always remember his wonderful sense of humor. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Following is what I read at my grandmother's eulogy:
FREE IS MY SPIRIT
YIELD NOT TO THE ELUSION OF THIS THEY CALL DEATH, BUT REJOICE FOR MY RELEASE FROM MY BODY, MY BREATH
NO LONGER CONFINED BY MY EARTHLY FORM, FREE IS MY SPIRIT TO NOW BE REBORN
APART OF THE UNIVERSE I AM GOING TO BE, YOU’LL KNOW ME IN THE SUNSET, THE FORREST, THE SEA
REMOVED FROM MY SHELL AS THE HAND OF A GLOVE, FREE IS MY SPIRIT TO FEEL ONLY LOVE
I AM CLOSER TO YOU NOW IN THIS STATE OF GRACE YET, I NEED NOT REACH FAR TO TOUCH GOD’S FACE
I’LL BE WITH YOU ALWAYS I’LL NEVER BE GONE...
YESTERDAY, I WAS THE SUNSET, TODAY, I AM THE DAWN
May God Bless you Bill and rest in peace.
Your friend,
Vicki Rae Collins
