My uncle Bill was a robust and indomitable heart who did not suffer fools, always had a twinkle in his eye and a blustery, unguarded laugh. Loving, non-nonsense, opinionated, and possessed of a great sense of humor, Uncle Bill was a life-loving representative of an amazing generation of Americans and people. He was, to the great good fortune of those who knew and loved him, a terrific product of his times. He was a participant in some of the signal moments in the nation’s history, and he knew it. His gusto and spirit will be missed. Simply a great guy who made the most of everything! Wish I’d had more time with him.
