Wyla Hohn Obituary
Hohn, Wyla Marie Hardin
Wyla Marie Hardin Hohn passed away at home, peacefully in her sleep, at the age of 79 on Tuesday, June 6th 2017. There are few people who touch our lives as powerfully as a mother and there are few mothers who have loved so much and gave so selflessly of their life as Wyla did. Her family was extremely thankful and blessed to have gathered with her the week prior to her passing to celebrate her almost 80th birthday and two grandchildren's graduations in Texas. Wyla accomplished much in her life. The eldest daughter of Willis and Maxine Hardin, she was born in Artesia, California, and spent her youth in Thoreau, New Mexico and Winslow, Arizona. She earned a degree in Education, raised six children, was a grandmother to 14 grandchildren, assisted in running her husband's law firm and businesses, and served her community in a number of positive ways. Some of the many titles she held were Mother, Wife, Grandmother, Cancer Survivor, Teacher, Life Master (in Bridge), Pianist, Librarian, Para-Legal, among many others. She was known for being a hard worker and voracious reader, always placing her duties above her own needs, and never missing even a single day of work at the Recorded Recreational Reading for the Blind while she underwent cancer treatments. One of the many highlights of her life was earning her Life Masters in Bridge in 2016, a goal she worked toward for many years. Her accomplishments and pursuit of goals were commendable. At these moments we are pressed for the words to express our love and gratitude for the time with a loved one, but in our case there are too many words. Wyla was an example of perseverance, resilience, and grace under pressure, leading by example and teaching us so many lessons along the way. Having earned her B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Arizona (1959), she embarked on a life-long role of leadership and education that touched each and every one of us. From showing us how to follow our dreams and reach our goals, to raising our own children, to pursuing an education that would provide a foundation of knowledge for the rest of our lives, and, when necessary, to rise above the trials of life with grace and purpose, she lead us each on our own journeys. Above all, Wyla unconditionally loved her family, did all she could to love, bless and serve them, and put her faith in Jesus Christ as her foundation. She provided us with the most important lessons in life, and for that we are forever grateful. We were blessed to have so many wonderful moments with her and are grateful that our children were able to learn from her example over these many years. She is survived by her five children, son Kristopher Von Hohn (Jacquelynn) of Houston, Texas and daughters Ilsa Weaver (Trent) of Waco Texas, Kirsten Howren (Todd) of Austin, Texas, Isolda Griffin of Phoenix, Arizona, and Ursla Null (Matthew) of Crested Butte, Colorado; her eldest son, Edward L. Von Hohn, predeceased her in 2009; her 14 grandchildren: Harrison and Anna Jane Von Hohn, Taryn, Taylor, Trent Jr., and Tatum Weaver, Hayden and Heath Howren, Stevie Patterson and Mackenzie Griffin, Asher, Tate, and Jace Von Hohn, and Winfield Null; and two sisters, Sandra Hardin Brown (Charles) of California and Elyse Hardin of Wyoming. Wyla will be laid to rest at her family lakehouse in Texas in a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Baylor University School of Law, Endowed Scholarship Fund in Law attention: Edward Lewis Von Hohn at One Bear Place #97026, Waco, Texas 76798-7026, to support more students as they gain the skills to lead future generations or to the Friends of the Sun City Libraries, tax id number 90-0757027 for general purposes in support of the Bell Branch, in celebration of her love of reading.
