Mary (Nennie) Nuñez
Mary (Nennie) Nuñez, 78 years old, a native of Flagstaff died peacefully, surrounded by her family on March 27, 2012, following a long illness. Mary Nuñez, was born July 1933 in McNary Arizona. She worked for NAU for 30 years, from 1963 to 1993. In 1988 the President, Faculty and Staff of NAU honored Mary for her personal devotion to her job. On February 9, 1988; President Eugene M. Hughes proclaimed this day as Mary Nuñez Recognition Day. Mary also served as Grand Marshall of the Homecoming parade that same year. As part of Mary's 30 years she spent 20 years at the Taylor Hall Dorm. Also in 1988 Los Hacheros Hispanic Alumni Organization honored Mary, recognizing her for her service. Mary was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in addition to serving on several committees at the Catholic Church, including the bereavement committee. She enjoyed Mexican music, Dancing and had a great sense of humor and spending time with family and friends. She will be deeply missed. Survivors include three daughters Patricia N. Wooten (Chris) – Scottsdale, Dolores N. Ramirez (Paul) – Flagstaff, JoAnn N. Thorpe(Don) – Mesa; her sister Emily Tellez (Martin) – Tempe. Six grandchildren; Emmett Wooten of Phoenix, Annette Geenen (Mike) of San Francisco, Amber Dorsch (Jason) of Flagstaff, Kristin Ramirez of Flagstaff, Brandon Thorpe and Brenton Thorpe of Mesa, Brother –in-law Tony Nuñez (Nellie) of Flagstaff; Sister-in-law Henerreta (Rickey) Lopez of Lavene; as well as nieces, nephews and many cousins. She is preceded in death by her husband Joseph J. Nuñez of 42 years. Father Cresencio Lopez, Mother Sarah V. Lopez, Brothers Richard (Chito) Lopez, David V. Lopez and nephew Richard (Lopes) Lopez. Evening vigil and Holy Rosary will be on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at 7:00 pm and funeral mass will be on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 10:00 am both at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel, 16 W. Cherry St. and burial will conclude services at Calvary Cemetery. Please join us as we lay her to rest.
In lieu of flowers the family would like donations to the Northland Hospice or your local Kidney or Liver Foundations.
