So sorry to discover Dick has passed. We met in the 90s when we were both going through difficult times and he would hang out with me in his front yard while I built his retaining walls. He had a good heart and I'm sorry we didn't get to catch up before he left us.

I only took one class with Dick and it was fantastic, but what I remember most was how deeply himself he was, without pretense. As far as I could tell he was a man who was so comfortable in his own self, and that in itself was a gift to learn from! He has surely touched the lives of so so so many.

We impacted each other profoundly with stories of HIV, I was acknowledged in one of his textbooks. His daughter Carrie and my daughter were friends and best memory was the two of them horseback riding. He touched my life deeply.

Dick was my boss when I first got the job at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. I think he hired me as I knew shorthand!! I was very organized which helped Dick in many ways. I got to know his moods which helped as dealing with students, faculty, and administrators was quite a challenge as he would have liked to only deal with the students I think!! We became friends through our wo years together and he helped me go thrugh the worst time in my life when my husband Denny died. I would be fine until he asked me "how are you doing?" His support and love got me through it. I hope I helped him get through his loosing his daughter when they were on a wonderful vacation. He will always have a special place in my heart.

I will always remember Dick's infectious laugh and his illegible signature--and I'll always be grateful that he asked me to teach an Honors course on the Vietnam War, an invitation that positively changed the trajectory of my life. RIP, My Friend.

Dr. Skeen taught the first Sociology class I ever took and it was what made me come back for more. He was funny, interesting, engaging, and could really hold the class's attention-- even a super big one like the intro class I was in. The first time I saw "Apocalypse Now" was in his class; what an an impactful way to share information. (I still think about that film and "The Heart of Darkness" to this day because of Dr. Skeen's thoughtful discussions about the themes embedded in it.)
My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and friends, and to his colleagues who all seemed like a happy, supportive team back in the late 80's/early 1990's. Thank you, Dr. Skeen, for helping me become interested in people in a whole new way. Peace to you.
