Alvin Adams Obituary

Alvin Joe Adams (Al) 1931 - 2010 Alvin J. Adams went home to Heaven on November 23, 2010. He passed peacefully from this earth, from his home, in the arms of his faithful wife, Joyce, of 51 years. Al was born in Taft, CA in 1931 on September 19th, when Taft was the "big city", to loving parents Clarence Darrow and Thelma Lee Adams. He moved as a young boy to Bakersfield, attending East High School, Bakersfield, College, and later transferring to University of Pacific where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics. Shortly after moving back to Bakersfield Al met his bride Joyce and they began a life together, raising three children. Al was a recovered alcoholic and enjoyed nearly 40 years of sobriety. His 40th AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) birthday would have been December 16, 2010. He treasured this day that marked a significant change in life, leading him to a life with Christ. Al was deeply involved in AA, Overcomers Outreach, and Recovery in Community, "The Adams House", helping many others with addictions to regain their lives. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His family and his many friends were the most valuable part of his life. Al had friends everywhere he went! He enjoyed hunting every September 1st with his son and grandchildren. His passion in life came at the age of 57 when he ran his first marathon. He became an avid runner and completed six marathons and numerous other races. Next, he discovered a new passion of cycling and on his 31st AA birthday his family presented him with a new bicycle that became his constant companion. The day before his 73rd birthday he rode the Lighthouse Century with his daughter and other cycling friends. His last century ride was September 2009. Al is greeted in Heaven by his parents; his grandson, Clinton; nephew, Chris; and many other loving relatives. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Joyce; daughters and spouses, Susan and Jim Futrell, Nancy and Ron Lerma; son and wife, Joe and Sandra Adams. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Erika and husband, A.J., Jake, Gabrielle, Joseph, Jimmi, Tristen, Aubrey, Jedidiah, and Augustine; as well as his two sisters and husbands, Bettie and Bill Jacobs, and Leenie and Gary Napier. Al also leaves behind many dearly loved nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service celebrating Al's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1st, at RiverLakes Community Church. Donations can be made in Al's name to Fellowship of Christian Athletes, P.O. Box 163, Bakersfield, CA 93312. Greenlawn Mortuary www.bakersfield.com/obits

Dear Joyce,
That was a wonderful obituary. Someday we will see our loved ones in heaven. Looking forward to that day, but there are so many that are still not ready to die. You are truly loved and my prayers are with you. When things settle down, please give me a call. Love, Marilyn

My heart aches with the loss of Al. My thoughts and prayers are with Joyce, and the family. Al is one of the nicest guy I've ever known, he and Joyce were the perfect examples of what God intended us all to be. I know heaven is a better place with him now there.

Al was always a great joy to be around. I looked forward to seeing him at the family gatherings I was able to attend. His passion and dedication to AA will continue to be an inspiration, as will his wonderful sense of humor. My love and empathy to Joyce and Nancy and Susan and Joe.

I just thought of Al the other day and wondered how he was doing. I first met him at Overcomers @ Riverlakes 13 years ago and he helped me through a very difficult time. He then further inspired me to start running and getting fit. I'd see him at the events and he'd still be participating...so inspiriational..he will be missed and will be fondly remembered by many.

I always smiled when I saw Al's name on the dental schedule. He was a wonderful man, happy go lucky, so full of energy and life. He will be missed. My sympathies go out to all his family and friends. I am sure he will be watching over all of us. Jeane@Dr. Rohs office

My heartfelt condolences to Al's family and all the friends he leaves behind. Al was a man of great faith, a man of integrity, a man of generosity, a man of compassion, and also a man who didn't mind telling you how the cow ate the cabbage if he felt you needed to hear it. I loved Al like a brother and mentor and am so grateful he was a part of my life. Al and Joyce helped me many, many times when I was at low points in my life. I thank God for having had the experience of knowing Al. There are literally hundreds of people whose lives he touched who feel the same way. Rest in peace, dear friend.
