Benjamin "Larry" Self
June 6,1953 - July 12, 2018
Known as Larry, Benjamin Larry Self passed away in his hometown of Bakersfield, California. His loving wife Joella Marie Plain Self, sons Wesley Ray Self and Benjamin William Self, daughter Sandra Marie Self, and many close family members surrounded him as he passed peacefully listening to one of his favorite songs "The Battle of New Orleans" by Johnny Horton. He was called home to our Lord on July 12. He is now in heaven with his parents Bill and Clara, brothers Bobby, Billy, Bert and sister Brenda.
He is survived by wife Joella of 32 years, sons Wesley & Ben, daughter Sandra, grandsons Riley and Adam, his brothers and sisters Buddy, Burrell, Loy, Betty, Lorene, Barbara, Beverly and Bitha, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Larry was born and raised in Bakersfield, California. From 1970 to 1976, he proudly served our country in the Army as part of the 82nd Airborne Division. Upon his return home, Larry became a union journeyman carpenter. He worked as a member of local 743 for over 30 years before retiring. He was a loving, caring, devoted husband, father and grandfather. Larry was an ardent reader who loved history, trivia and discussions with family and friends. He was an avid sports fan of the Yankees and Lakers, and enjoyed listening to his many albums having a love for music. He enjoyed the simple moments of life. Larry will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Services will be held in Arvin, California on Monday, July 30, 2018 promptly at 9:00am, at the Bakersfield National Cemetery, 30338 E. Bear Mountain Blvd, Arvin, CA 93203.
