David Calaway Obituary

David Lee Calaway July 10, 1941 - July 23, 2013 David Lee Calaway, who did not like his middle name, was born in Bunkie, LA, on July 10, 1941, to D.G. and Lottie Smith Calaway. Always a charmer, he worked his first deal in 1945, when he "sold" his baby sister, Nancy Lynn, to his dad's coworkers. David led a rich and varied life. He graduated from Cheneyville High School in 1959. During his summers off from college, he worked in the oilfields of Raceland, LA. After graduating from Northwestern State Natchitoches, LA, with a degree in Health and Physical Education in 1964, he moved to Nevada to teach. While teaching in Austin, NV, he made the deal of a lifetime and married Treva Kathleen Swafford, the love of his life, in 1965. David worked as a teacher for many years. Always a talented athlete, he transferred those skills into coaching high school basketball in Austin, NV, and Rosamond, CA. He also coached baseball in Rosamond, Fallon, and Reno, NV. He worked as a professional baseball scout, spotting exceptional players for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Cincinnati Reds. His life's work was being a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a brother. Although he would never say so, his family was the joy of his life. He is survived by his wife of 48 1/2 years, Treva; daughter and son-in-law, Victoria and Joe Pilkington of Bakersfield; son and daughter-in-law, David and Kimberly Glenmore of Clovis; six grandchildren, Kelcy, Connor, Hunter, Cierra, Caylie, and Bubba (Cannon); sister, Nancy Lynn Calaway Crump; brother-in-law, Ed; and one niece, Ashley of Alexandria, LA. David was looking forward to finally "retiring" and fishing at his new home in Golden, MO. He spent the last six years helping Treva with their daycare business, having barbecues, and watching all the sports he could track, especially LSU and his beloved New Orleans Saints. Some of his most treasured times were cheering on the Saints with his #1 granddaughter, Kelcy, who misses her Pa and hero dearly. His sparring matches with his granddaughter, Hunter, always ended in shared laughter. Connor, his oldest grandson, is a swim coach and is now called "Coach Calaway," which would have made his grandpa supremely happy. His granddaughters' athletic ability was a joy to him, and he loved watching Cierra and Caylie's volleyball games. He had plans to watch all of Bubba's basketball games, and he bragged about Bubba's vertical jump. He knew he could win every game. There are no words to express the kind of "Pa" he was and how much he will be missed. We love you forever... "The God of all Grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast." ~ 1 Peter 5:10 For condolences please visit www.greenlawnmortuaryandcemetery.com. I coached David his senior year of high school. Like many coaches, I felt a bond that never broke. Of course, he was a good athlete, but he was a better person and will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to Treva and the family.

I played Varsity Baseball in 76, 77 for "Coach"... He was a huge impression in my early life. He taught me to always "get ahead of the count". Our prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

Treva, my prayers go out to you and the entire family. Knowing coach, he's probably coaching a team in heaven already. "Save me a spot coach".

Treva, Tori, David and Family: The Cass Family sends our deepest sympathies, May GOD be with you all at this troubling time, and may HE bless you with HIS Love, Mercy, Grace and Compassion. We have missed you guys and had we known that you were up in Bakersfield, we sure would have gotten together with you. The fun times our families had long ago just seemed to slip away after you left the area. I wish I could tell Dave thanks for the fun times, but I can't, so I will say thank you Treva for the fun times we had together and we hope to visit with you soon. GOD Bless You and may you feel our Love coming your way....

I'm so sorry to hear about Mr. Calaway's passing. He taught me to drive when Driver's Ed was still a high school class. He was always patient with us, even when one of my classmates swerved to avoid hitting a roadrunner that ran across the freeway! I know he will be missed.
