DONALD CARL COOK
January 19, 1960 - November 4, 2019
Donald Carl Cook, beloved husband, father, family member and friend, passed away November 4, 2019, surrounded by loved ones. The firstborn child and eldest son of Otto and Katherine Cook, Don grew up in southwest Bakersfield, where he developed lifelong friendships with neighbors and school friends. Don started working from a young age at Larson's Dairy where he was the last known caretaker of the Dairy's celebrity hippopotamus, Sam. He attended South High, excelling both academically and athletically, and earning the distinction of serving as class valedictorian as well as a spot on the 1978 Kern County All-Star basketball team. Don went on to earn a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where he and his friends developed a love of the Central Coast, particularly for camping at Montana de Oro. His close friends called him 'Big Don.' Don met the love of his life, Diana, in San Diego, where he had just launched his career as an engineer with the state. Two hearts from Bakersfield bonded hundreds of miles from home. Don and Diana married and moved to Castro Valley, where their daughter Olivia, jewel of the family, was born. It was there they raised Olivia, nurturing her into the gifted young woman she is today.
An avid musician, Don played his guitar everywhere from his own basement with friends to backyard and holiday parties with large audiences. He was a coach, mentoring high-school championship basketball teams right out of college and later guiding Olivia's soccer and softball teams through many rewarding seasons. His cooking and home-brew beer skills were legendary, and he and Diana hosted many glorious parties together in their home. Don was a best friend to all and as genuine as they come. His deep empathy, kindness and intellectual curiosity made all feel welcome and appreciated. A highly regarded mechanical engineer, Don was the Principal Safety Engineer for the State of California in the Pressure Vessel Unit, and also held leadership positions and served as chair for several important committees associated with the National Board of Pressure Vessel Inspectors, the California Boiler Inspector's Association and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Don leaves behind his beloved wife of 22 years, Diana Cook, his daughter Olivia, mother Katherine, his brother Robert and wife Kimberly, brother Douglas and his wife Angelica, sister, Stephanie Wood and her husband Norman, as well as nephews and nieces Douglas and Sara Cook, Kazuki Ohashi, and Nathan and Ryan Wood. He was preceded in death by his father, Otto.
A memorial will be held on Saturday, November 23, at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 4500 Buena Vista Road in Bakersfield. A reception will immediately follow the service at Salty's Banquet Center, 6720 Schirra Court. An additional celebration of life is planned in Castro Valley on December 7th. Donations to the American Cancer Society are appreciated.

Don played rhythm guitar in our band at Cal Poly. Big heart. Fun guy. Sorry to hear of his passing.

I didn't know Don well at South High, but I always loved his open-hearted smile and his mop of unkempt hair. I'll never forget his valedictorian speech -- he was a feminist before his time. I'm sorry to learn his life was so brief.

I met Don in 2008 in my professional capacity, when I needed to ask him to allow some solar steam generators to operate. His interest in steam boilers was quite broad, as I learned he was on the Historical Committee for the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors. And he was interested in advancing steam boiler technology and saw solar energy as an opportunity. He detailed his staff to thoroughly review the design (which preceded me), and inspect the system in time for us to host Governor Schwarzenegger for 'first steam'.
The next year I came back to him for approval to modify those units to make them work better, and he and the staff were very supportive and had suggestions on how we should move forward.
One of those steps was obtaining certification from the National Board to design our solar steam generators, which we accomplished. The only bad part was that I no longer needed to drive to Oakland to meet with Don.
A few years later I was helping another company with high pressure air tanks, and Don was a great resource again.
He was always a professional -- putting the health and safety of Californians first -- but also friendly, considerate and extremely generous with his time, his knowledge, and his advice.
I am deeply saddened that I cannot call on him today for advice and send my condolences to his family and friends

It was 1998 and my National Board (NB) Commission was about to expire. I had unsuccessfully failed to renew my NB with Don's predecessors. As a safety consultant with an insurance broker, the only way to renew was as a state pressure vessel inspector or insurance company pressure vessel inspector. Don actually set a precedent w/the State of CA. I had to be a part time carrier inspector and they had to pay me a small fee to satisfy the Labor Code. Thanks to Don's efforts, my NB Commission was renewed. Years later working for the State of CA, Don allowed me to renew my NB Commission while working for the PSM Unit. This is just one example of Don's professionalism.
Don, you were/are a class act. Rest in Peace.
Your Friend, Dirk J. Duchscherer, Carmichael, CA.

I had the privilege of assistant-coaching Don's soccer team, with both his daughter Olivia and my daughter Alyssa as members. It was truly rewarding to be around and learn so much from such a wonderful and giving man.

Unbelieveable, Don, was simply put, a great person. I am deeply saddened by this news. A tragic loss for anyone that knew Don. I worked with Don, Robert, Doug and Otto at The Dairy. Every one of them made you feel important. Played in many pickup basketball games with Don and his brothers. He was very talented in many things. I am shocked. Prayers go out to his Mother, Brothers, Wife and Daughter. Although I moved on and started a family of my own, I have very vivid memories of time spent with many of my friends of which Don was. God Bless to you my friend, and may perpetual light shine upon you and your Dad. Sincerely, Mark Passaglia

I first met and grew to know Don through our membership with the National Board. I was new to the board, and Don was there to help me get settled in to my position. He was a great friend, always smiling, always had a kind word to share. He will be missed greatly.
