FRED WARFIELD HOHM
May 14, 1923 - June 6, 2022
Fred W. Hohm, 99, passed away surrounded by loving family on June 6, 2022, at his residence at Brighton Manor. He was born in Chicago, Illinois to Harvey and Marie (Warfield) Hohm on May 14, 1923. He grew up in Park Ridge, Illinois with his two sisters, Elaine and Betty. Fred attended Main Township High School.
In 1943, Fred enlisted with the Army. Through the Army, he attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. After D - Day, he was sent to France as part of Task Force Linden, then joined the 2nd Battalion of the 242 Infantry. They were part of the Rainbow Division which participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Dachau concentration camp. After victory in Europe, Fred continued with the Army of occupation serving as Staff Sergeant Message Center Chief with the signal corps of the 9th Army until March 1946.
After returning home from the war, Fred pursued an executive career with Illinois Bell (AT&T). In 1947, he met and married his first love, Lorraine Clessler in Winona, Minnesota. Fred and Lorraine moved to beautiful Lake Bluff, Illinois. In 1955, their first child, Mike, was born. Then in 1958, they welcomed their daughter, Carla. Sadly, in 1964, Lorraine passed away in her sleep from complications from an illness. In 1965, Fred met his second love, Mary Ingle. Mary was a widow with three children. They married and blended their two families together. Fred was a wonderful and kind father and stepfather. At one point, he had four teenagers in high school, yet never raised his voice while parenting them.
In 1967, Fred bought a farm in Spring Prairie, Wisconsin. The farm had ponds for fishing and swimming and woodlands for hunting. Fred himself built a cottage, garage, and an additional barn on his property. Needless to say, he was very handy. He also bought four horses for his kids to ride. In later years, all the children brought their grandchildren to the farm for many happy holidays. Although the farm was idyllic, Fred and his wife Mary spent their winters in Florida, where their children also loved to visit them!
In 2009 Fred and Mary moved to Brookdale in Bakersfield, California to be close to their daughters. Although Mary passed away in 2012, Fred continued living at Brookdale where he enjoyed socializing with friends and dancing at happy hour. In 2016, he had the opportunity to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington DC which truly touched him. At the age of 97, Fred moved to Brighton Manor assisted living home. Our family is so thankful for the wonderful kindness and warmth he received from all his caregivers there. We also thank Hoffmann Hospice for their thorough and excellent assistance in his final days.
Fred is survived by his five children: Donald Ingle, Joanne (Raul) Carrillo, Mike Hohm, Carla Hohm, and Charles Ingle; eight grandchildren: Sonya, Candace, and Iris Carrillo, Juan Carlos Nadal, Valarie Davis, David Ingle, and Spencer and Carson Ingle; and six great-grandchildren: Adam, Katy, Jacob, Hal, Maggie, and Ajax.
Graveside services will be held at a later date at Northshore Garden of Memories in Lake Bluff, Illinois.
