Private Holy Rosary and Mass of the Christian Burial were said at St. Francis Church for Gary Mathew Mullhofer, age 66, of Bakersfield who passed away November 20, at his home in Bakersfield. Fr. Craig Harrison officiated the services and interment followed at Greenlawn Cemetery River Blvd.
Gary was born March 24, 1938 to Mathew and Helen Mullhofer in San Mateo County, California. His family moved to Bakersfield in 1946. Gary graduated from Garces High School with the class of 1955. He received his Bachelors Degree from Fresno State in 1959 and later went on to complete his Masters Degree in 1970. He married Judi Freese, December 16, 1961 in Bakersfield at St. Josephs Church.
Gary began his teaching career for the Bakersfield City School District in 1962. He then transferred to El Tejon School District in 1968 where he first taught and then served as Superintendent until 1974. In 1974 he became Superintendent of the Rosedale School District. At that time the district had one school, made up of 600 students and 25 teachers. When he retired in 1998 the district had six schools and 3,400 students. Gary was responsible for building five schools and creating a Mello-Roos tax that insured the district would have construction funding for at least twenty-five years. He was also the Past President of the Association of Califonria School Administrators for West Kern. He then served on the State Superintendents Committee for two years. Rosedale Schools received California State Distinguished School and National Blue Ribbon honors during his tenure. He faighfully served the Rosedale Union School District as superintendent for twenty-four years. Gary was also a member of the Rotary North for 7 years, active in Jack Frost Football League and supportive of youth sports. He loved dinners with family and friends, and his passions were crossword puzzles, Monday Night Football and Las Vegas. He enjoyed his work of selling tax sheltered annuities and the clients he worked with. What was most dear to him were his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mathew and Helen Mullhofer and infant daughter, Mary Alice. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Dinah and Jeff, their children, Ashley and Gary Michael; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Carolyn Mullhofer, their children, Nicholas and Zachary Mullhofer; former wife and lifelong friend, Judi Mullhofer; sister and brother-in-law, Gaye and Glenn Siemon; brother and sister-in-law, Patrick and Kathy Mullhofer.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Garys name to the Rosedale Union School District Music Program, 2553 Old Farm Rd., Bakersfield, CA 93312.
