Gladys Stilwill Obituary

Gladys was born in Camden, NJ and went to Audubon High School where she met her husband George. She was Valedictorian of their high school class. They were married in 1961 and celebrated their 60th anniversary on June 10th of this year. She is survived by her husband George, son Thomas (daughter-in-law Vicky, twins Paige and Carson), daughter Cynthia, and daughter Jennifer (daughter-in-law Jill).
Gladys started her Bachelors Degree on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands in 1977 where they lived for 9 years and finished at CSUB after they moved to Bakersfield in 1982. She went on to obtain her Masters in English in 1994.
She retired in 2005 from East Bakersfield High School after teaching English for the Health Careers Academy. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed volunteering with the Friends of the Southwest Library.
She traveled mostly with her daughter Cynthia to six different continents and only missed Antarctica. She also hosted a number of foreign exchange students and enjoyed learning about different cultures.
A celebration of life service will be held on October 9th at 11:00am at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2525 Belle Terrace, with a luncheon to follow.

Gladys was my next-door neighbor at East High School for many years. Two memories:
One day in between classes a student urgently informed me of a fight in another teacher's classroom. I enter the room to discover tiny Gladys had one of the students in a full-Nelson headlock. You couldn't see Gladys behind the student--just her arms up and around the student's neck. I swear she was growling.
Not long after Glady's retirement I saw Gladys and her husband at the airport in Phoenix waiting at a gate to board the same plane I was boarding back to Bakersfield. I snuck up behind her and whispered in her ear, "Do you come here often?" The way she stiffened, steeled herself, and slowly turned around to confront me gave me flashbacks to the full-Nelson incident. The way her face turned from fury to delight was priceless.
I will carry these memories with me always.
