Hermia Popplewell Obituary

Hermia Irene (Patricia) Popplewell 1915 - 2011 Hermia Irene (Patricia) Popplewell, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 11, 2011. She was 95 years young. Patricia was born November 23, 1915 in Creighton, Nebraska to Catherine (Davids) Teipel and Herman Teipel. She was raised by a loving stepfather, Henry Rokar due to her father's passing prior to her birth. She resided in Nebraska until 1936 when she came to California with her sister Alice. She married Max Vesper Popplewell on August 8, 1938 whom she had met previously in Nebraska. They were married at the Wilshire Wedding Chapel in Beverly Hills, California. In her younger years, she was employed by Western Union, transcribing telegrams for the stars including Bob Hope, Clark Gable, Jack Benny, Bing Crosby and Cary Grant. Her husband Max operated a service station across from Warner Brothers Studios, Burbank, CA also attending to the stars. After moving to La Canada, CA she was president of the gardening club, a passion that carried with her throughout her life. The family moved to Santa Barbara in 1965 where they were members of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for 46 years. Patricia served Good Shepherd in many capacities including The Golden Coffee, LWML and confirmation sponsor. She especially loved when the Bell Choir played. Patricia was a season ticket holder of the Santa Barbara Symphony for over 40 years. For health reasons, she resided in Bakersfield for the last year of her life, living with her son Mart. Over the last 17 years she was able to travel with her son Mart and his family to multiple family reunions across the country, Las Vegas, Oregon to visit relatives and the central coast. Patricia was given the gift of a long full life which she used to honor God and love her family. She found comfort in being around family and greatly appreciated her ability to be in her home until the age of 94. She is survived by her two wonderful children, Patricia Catherine Meeder and husband Alan of Santa Barbara and Mart Barrett Popplewell and wife Cathrine of Bakersfield; three grandsons, Matthew Hersey and wife Katie of Santa Barbara, Jeffrey Hersey of Kissimmee, Florida, and Daniel Max Popplewell of Bakersfield; two great granddaughters, Zoey and Izabella Hersey of Santa Barbara; and one sister, Dona Filkins. Preceding her in death are her parents, Catherine and Henry Rokar and Herman Teipel; her husband Max Popplewell; five sisters, Louise Stauffer, Verna Williams, Alice Winter, Grace Teipel and Billy Andress. The family would like to thank Dr. William Bichai, MD, PharmD along with Elizabeth Logue, NP for the extraordinary care and compassion they provided during her time of illness. They would also like to thank Davita Dialysis, San Joaquin Community Hospital, Evergreen of Bakersfield and Interim Health Care for the outstanding services they provided. Viewing will be held in Bakersfield on Wednesday, Feb. 16th from 3 to 7 p.m. at Doughty-Calhoun-O'Mera, 1100 Truxtun Ave. Bakersfield, CA. Private Interment will be Thursday in Santa Barbara. Mart and family, I am so sorry for your loss and send my deepest sympathy. Patricia was a joy to care for at Evergreen. She brightened my day with her good nature and wit. Her mission on Earth is complete. She will now enjoy life with her Lord and Heavenly Father. Rejoyce in the time spent with her on Earth and know she is waiting to re-unite with all family members in the Kingdom of Heaven.
