IRENE VELMA (COBBS) GONZALES
October 28, 1937 - January 28, 2023
Irene Velma (Cobbs) Gonzales passed away at home on January 28, 2023 surrounded by all four of her children. Irene was born to Ted and Merlene Cobbs in Visalia, California. She spent her childhood and high school days in Visalia, CA. Irene attended Mt. Whitney High School and College of the Sequoias, where she was a song leader at both schools. Irene was a beautiful lady, inside and out. She was awarded Miss Visalia Cub in 1954.
She met and fell in love, with the love of her life, Monico Monte Gonzales in 1956. Monico asked her to marry him on their first date and they were married on July 7, 1956. They spent their early married years in Los Angeles, CA while he played basketball for USC. They later moved to Walnut Creek, CA where they enjoyed raising their family of four children. Throughout the years, when someone in her family needed support, she would rally the other family members with one of her favorite quotes Let's Circle the Wagons. Irene was a homemaker and received much delight in cooking and entertaining for family and friends. She and Monico enjoyed traveling and vacationing to Hawaii, Europe and along the California coast. One of their favorite destinations was Carmel, CA, where Monico would golf in tournaments and Irene enjoyed browsing in the shops. She loved being with her family, dancing with Monico, shopping at Nordstrom, getting all dressed up and looking pretty for an evening out, drinking a nice glass of Chardonnay, attending social engagements, dressing in fashion and always having her own style, doing some part time modeling for local dress shops and celebrating her Irish spirit on St. Patrick's Day. In 2000, they moved to Bakersfield to enjoy retirement life and be closer to their youngest son, Dr. Corey Gonzales and wife Jamie.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents Ted Cobbs and Merlene Armour; her step-father Benjamin Armour; husband of 50 years Monico Monte Gonzales and her sister Fay (Cobbs) Alexander. She is survived by her brother Richard Butch Cobbs and wife Michelle of Morro Bay, CA; sister-in-law Corinne (Gonzales) Puahau and husband Myron of Kanehoe, Hawaii; sisters-in-law Maura and Marta Gonzales of Fresno, CA; brother-in-law Norman Alexander of El Dorado, CA; her four children Kelle (Gonzales) Brown and husband Ken of Redondo Beach, CA; Kristy (Gonzales) Hubbard and husband Steven of Lafayette, CA; Monte Alan Chip Gonzales and wife Josie of Martinez, CA; and Dr. Corey Gonzales and wife Jamie of Bakersfield, CA.
