Jack Saba Obituary

Jack Michael Saba 1932 - 2013 Jack Saba was born on July 14, 1932, the third son of Nazera and Mike Saba. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Alfred and Jim. He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Elizabeth and his children Mike Saba and wife Dana, Anne Beth Hallock and husband Lee, and Gerald Saba; and by four grandchildren, Ellie Saba, Mason Saba, and Katie Hallock and Jenna Hallock. Jack's schooling included East Bakersfield High School class of 1950, Bakersfield College and Fresno State University. Upon graduating he was employed by the Bakersfield City Schools at the newly opened Washington Junior High until the U.S. Navy sent him for two years of service to the island of Guam in the Pacific. There he became a Third Degree Mason. He also learned to play golf which became a lifetime passion. He returned to teach for several more years and then entered the family business, Saba's Men's Clothing Store, for the remainder of his working life, retiring in 2006. His meticulous attention to tailoring endeared him to many law enforcement officers as well as many other uniformed government employees. He met Elizabeth Garrard in 1959 at Golden State Junior High School where they were both teaching. They were married in 1960 at the First Methodist Church in Gainsville, Georgia. From then on Jack's life was filled with his work, helping to rear three children, enjoying an active sport's life that included golf at Bakersfield Country Club, long distance running, triathlons and active support of his children's sports activities. Dear to his heart were his membership on the Salvation Army Advisory Board, his membership in the Rotary Club of Bakersfield East where both he and Elizabeth are Paul Harris Fellows, and his membership at Wesley Methodist Church and later, the First Congregational Church. A Memorial Service for Jack is scheduled for Monday, October 7th, at the First Congregational Church, 5 Real Road, at 9:00 a.m. The family wishes to express gratitude to Jack's caregivers at Pacifica Memory Care, specifically Director Irma Luna and her staff members, Debbie and Ruby; and to Optimal Hospice Care, real experts in creating a circle of love for all, including the residents as well as their families. The family suggests in place of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer's Disease Association of Kern County, 5500 Olive Drive, 93308. www.bakersfield.com/obits

To the Saba family, sending my dearest condolences. First time I met Jack was when I was 18 years old and looking for a job to put me through college. Little did I know I was working for the Saba family for nearly 7 years. Jack was a wonderful, generous gentleman to everyone. I have so many wonderful memories of all the Saba brothers:) especially Jack with his unintentional funny humor! The Saba family are very special people, and God bless you all. Love Diana (Camarillo) Garay.

Jack was an inspiration to me as a father. He taught me that the greatest gift we can give our children is to love and adore them.

I knew Jack from my time at the Bakersfield Californian. He was one of my clients and I ALWAYS enjoyed visiting him in the store. He was the nicest man and I appreciated him every day. The world is a darker place without his smiling presence. God Bless you all and I pray you find peace and comfort.

Dear Elizabeth and family, it was such an honor to care for Jack the past few years and be an extended part of your family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. We have a lot of great memories of Jack at Pacifica Senior Living and we want to thank you and your family for allowing us to be apart of Jack's life. We know he is in a better place in heaven running his marathons for miles and miles.

I met Jim and Al and their father Mike in August 1957 when I was hired by the BPD as a patrol officer. I had very little money in those days. They fitted me with a uniform and all the necessary things to go with it. Al told me to just sign the ticket and pay what I could every month. Al came into the business in the mid 1960's. I was a customer for many many years and was always treated with respect and service above and beyond what was required or expected. Goodbye Jack, thanks for everything.

Elizabeth and Mike,
How saddened we are to have learned of Jack's passing. By all means, everything said about Jack and the Saba family in the memorial guest book we would like to affirm. What a wonderful and exemplary GENTLEMAN. He will be dearly missed. The Bakersfield community is a better place because of your presence and ever-loving deeds. Our condolences to the family. May God bless.

It was an honor to have known Mr. Saba through my friendship with his daughter Anne Beth. He was always a true gentleman, kind and encouraging. I loved seeing him at various races and out for a run at Lake Ming. He truly touched many people with his positive influence and loving ways.

1976....as a rookie at BPD I had the pleasure of buying uniforms from both Jack and Jim.....with Al always in the background. I bought clothes from Jack, both as a policeman and later as a young insurance agent. Jack was one of the kindest people I have ever known.
Please accept my condolences.

Just heard. Mr. Jack, I had hoped you could hang on until I returned to Bakersfield in December for the holidays. I wanted to sneak you more chocolates. I still hear your voice in my mind, always so cheerful, asking, "Hey, Charlotte! How are you?" since I was two years old. You were always good to me, coming to important celebrations in my life and including me in yours.
To Mike, Anne Beth and Gerry: I am so sorry for your loss. Your dad was the friendliest person I have ever known. I hate he had to suffer and that you had to lose him slowly.
To Miss Elizabeth: I'm sure you're exhausted after the last ten years of this ravaging illness. You have fought the good fight and now Jack IS All RIGHT. I am sorry I'll miss his memorial. I'm sure it will be so crowded with many friends and former customers, officers who shopped with him so long, grown children from the Pinehurst neighborhood and golfing buddies. I hope you'll let me take you out in December and we'll tell Jack stories. I love seeing the store sign at the museum! You both were always so good to me and I just miss him and ache for you. I pray you and your family can find some joy at being together at this time and remembering you were loved by someone truly wonderful.
