James Olcott Obituary

JAMES LEE OLCOTT

July 21, 1947 – August 7, 2025

James Lee Olcott was born on July 21, 1947 in Bakersfield, California and passed away on August 7, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Gene Harley and Lelia Lorraine, and his younger brother Larry Robert. Jim is survived by his loving wife of thirty years, Debbie Olcott; son Timothy Patrick O'Hara, wife Joy, and only grandson Bob Harley; brother Mike (Nancy), nieces, Lauren and Katie and nephew Alex; and a beloved extended family and many dear friends.

Jim graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1965, "Once a Driller, Always a Driller." After graduating he attended Bakersfield College and later transferred to the University of Wyoming on a tennis scholarship. During his time in Wyoming he developed a deep love for the outdoors and hunting. He would return to Wyoming annually for an elk hunting trip. He earned a Bachelors in Business and worked in many amazing locations such as Las Vegas and Hawaii. Jim finally returned to Bakersfield and worked for various local companies. In 1973, his mother opened Village Hallmark Shoppe with her husband and sons. This gift store soon became Olcotts known for its fine china and gifts. Jim worked many wonderful years with his mother and brothers as the office manager.

Jim was a member of AA with 42 years of sobriety. He faithfully attended meetings twice a week and was always available to mentor anyone in need. Jim shared that AA was a brotherhood and he made lifelong friends. He referred to his meetings as, "Going to church". Even as his health declined, he was so excited to see his brothers from AA.

Jim shared that his proudest accomplishment in life was being a Dad. He said that his son Tim was truly his best friend. Jim and Tim would sit on the patio for hours talking about life, and they never went a day without talking. Jim was a dedicated Papa to Bob, picking him up every day from school. You would frequently see Jim with Bob at the golf course or Mauricios. Jim never missed an awards ceremony, open house, tournament, or event for Bob. He was Bob's biggest fan. Jim was the love of Debbie's life and they had a wonderful marriage. Both loved to travel with Tim, Joy, Bob and the in-laws. They visited many exciting states and countries. One of Jim's favorite places to visit was Kauai.

Jim was a loving Husband, Dad and Papa.

A Memorial Service for Jim will be held at Greenlawn Southwest Cemetery, September 10 at 10 am. Lunch at Woolgrowers will follow the services.

A special thanks to Hoffman Hospice RN Vanessa and Personal Care Aide Maria, for all their love, support and kindness during this difficult time.

Jim and I met 65 years ago as students at Emerson Jr. High. Our friendship grew over the years from mere acquaintances into one of mutual respect. Jim always impressed me as a person of goodwill, integrity, and a desire to do the right thing for his community and team. Jim was elected student body president at Emerson. A fine basketballer, he played varsity basketball at BHS, a league championship team.
He was always among the first to reach out to me at class reunions or other occasions, even on rare trips to Bakersfield. More than a few in our Class of 1965 community have already expressed how dearly he is missed. I extend my deepest condolences to the Olcott family. May Jim rest in eternal peace.

Big hugs to the Olcott family. I loved working with Debbie in the Bakersfield City School District and she loved talking about her family. I know that Jim meant a lot to Debbie, Tim, Joy, and Bob.
