Jeanette Cloud Obituary

JEANETTE GAIL (CHIC) CLOUD

April 13, 1939 - September 7, 2023

Chic Cloud passed away peacefully at home on September 7, 2023, surrounded by her family, friends and neighbors. She was born in Bakersfield and lived there all but two years of her life when husband Gary served in the Army out of state. After graduating from East Bakersfield High School in 1956, Chic married Gary, her sweetheart, and remained married 59 years until his passing. They had two children, Brad and Kristen, and devoted herself to raising them, serving as Cub Scout den mother, Bluebirds mothers and on PTA's. She encouraged them to play all the sports they could and attended nearly every event, no matter how hard the seats or hot the temperature. She advocated for her kids when needed and was able to gain admission to public schools for Kristen, who is hearing impaired, before schools were required to provide special education. She spent countless hours helping with Kristen's speech development and lip reading at home. Later on, Chic worked out of the home in the travel industry for 21 years, eventually co-owning (with Shay DeWeese) Cloud 9 Travel. This instilled a passion for travel that took her all over the world many times, visiting 6 continents. She loved and was beloved by the many clients for whom she expertly tailored wondrous vacations. She retired in 1997 and continued to travel and share her love of it with Gary, friends and family.

Throughout her life, Chic was always creating art: sewing, knitting, cross stitching, making Macrame, oil painting and even a bit of guitar. Her ultimate artistic passion was quilting for which won many awards. Her beautiful creations are displayed in the homes of so many family and friends and became a part of her charity work, quilting blankets for The Isolet Program at Cottonpatch and Quilts of Valor (for veterans). She also loved to teach others to quilt, passing on the craft to countless others. She was an artist in the kitchen as well, creating so many tasty hors d oeuvres, meals, baked goods and candy.

A delight to all she met, Chic made and kept lifelong friends including her Priority Sisters from high school, her beloved bridge club and several quilting groups. But she never stopped making friends, husband Gary always said she never knew a stranger.

Chic was a devoted daughter, caring for mother, Marie Pitts, and her sister whom she treasured, Joy Barbour in their later years. She and Gary shared a love of family, travel, baking, dogs and wine and their favorite part of the day became sharing a glass of wine (or gin and tonic) while gazing at the sunset from their home near Hidden Lake. She was his sole caretaker in his final years.

A woman of faith, she was a member of Laurelglen Bible Church and Riverlakes Community Church and attended and help facilitate a women's bible study group.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Kristen and David Hamilton of Colorado Springs, CO, and grandchildren Mikael, Eliza and Claire Hamilton; son and daughter-in-law Brad and Deanna Cloud of Missoula, MT; grandson Sam Cloud and granddaughter-in-law, Gini Frauenthal, and great grandson, Theo of Goleta, CA; granddaughter and grandson-in law Carey and Jesse Boyce and great granddaughters Ella, Cecelia and Olive Boyce, of Missoula, MT; sister-in-law JuDee Ruppert and several nieces and nephews.

The family thanks the caring staff of Hoffmann Hospice, Around the Clock, Kern Medical Center and The Pointe at Summit Hills.

Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, September 12 at Riverlakes Community Church, 4301 Calloway Drive.

Brad, Kristen and Families,

I send my condolences to you all for the passing of Chick. We (Ronnie, Nene, Terrie, Vickie and myself Cindie Webb) lived next door to you on McDonald Way. I have fond memories of our family going to your house on Sunday nights and watching Flipper....? or Disney..? Chick made all of our Barbie clothes and I actually still have them. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I met Chic through my almost lifetime friendship with her son Brad. She was the consummate wife, mother, grandmother, and grandmother. Bakersfield strong. She always knew how to tease me and I took it in the spirit it was given. What a rich and wonderful life she lived. Now she is with Gary for eternity.

Chic and I became acquainted through our daughters, Robin and Kristen. Later in life, we worked together in the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild.....my memories of her are all cheerful and filled with energy. May God comfort the family with many beautiful similar memories.

I met Chic about 20 years ago through my wife, and Bakersfield native, Dianne Krausse who is a lifelong friend of Kristen (Cloud) Hamilton. My wife was so excited to introduce me to their family, and as the day to meet them approached, she would say to me "Oh, your gonna love meeting "Chicken Gary". Being the loving boyfriend (soon to be fiance) I would smile and show exciting enthusiasm! Finally I got to meet Gary and his wife Chic and was amazed and enamored at this loving couple. But finally curiosity got the best of me and I had to ask Gary, this massive man, "why do they call you "Chicken Gary"? He giggled, but my wife, agast in embarrassment, said "OMG, this is Chic AND Gary!" Chic let out a laugh, gave me a hug, and I immediately felt the love she (and he) have probably shown so many others. While I came later in their lives they always made me feel part of the Bakersfield family that my wife was part of. Gonna miss you "Chicken Gary"!
