Jeffrey Moreland Obituary

Jeffrey Scott Moreland May 25, 1975 - November 16, 2012 Jeffrey Scott Moreland, 37, of Bakersfield, California passed away at home on Friday, November 16, 2012 after a thirteen-month battle with brain cancer. Jeff was born on May 25, 1975 in Bakersfield. He graduated from Highland High School in 1993. Jeff played football for HHS and later for Bakersfield College. He graduated from California State University Bakersfield in 1997 with a Bachelors of Art degree in Criminal Justice. Jeff and Sarah (Barnard) Moreland were married on July, 1, 2000. On May 8, 2012, they welcomed into the world their daughter, Tula Sophia. Jeff was a devoted husband and loving father, delighting in his family. The Morelands were members of Valley Baptist Church; their faith in Jesus Christ crucial to their lives. Jeff worked as a correctional officer at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility at State Prison, Corcoran (SATF/CSP) for fifteen years, making the friendships and professional relationships that helped sustain him during his battle with cancer. Jeff's friends and family will most remember his sense of humor and joy in living, be it getting dirty sliding into second as part of his softball team, rigging the froggin' gig on his Jeep, laboring over his Lego Millennium Falcon, enjoying a Stephen King novel, or cheering on the Dodgers, Steelers and Lakers with friends and family. Jeff was the consummate storyteller and could command an audience with the best of tales, eliciting laughter to the point of tears. He had the gift of service, and his heart was moved to help those in need. Jeff is survived by his wife, Sarah, and daughter, Tula; parents Clarence Cecil and Janet Marie Moreland; grandmother Dorothy Gayer; brother Michael, sister-in-law Mallory, and nephew Lucas Moreland. A memorial service will be held at Laurelglen Bible Church at 2801 Ashe Road, Bakersfield on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 10:00 am. Family and friends will celebrate Jeff's life and thank God for His provisions, especially as we reflect on the journey we have traveled with Jeff over the last year. Dear Sarah, Tula, and the Moreland family,
I was Jeff's math teacher many years ago at Chipman Jr. High. I remember him as a tall, rather thin blond with a very good sense of humor. He was well liked by his peers and teachers. I was stunned and saddened to read of his passing. In a perfect world, students would not preceed their teachers in death...
