Dr. Jess Diamond, FAAP
September 18, 1918 - November 15, 2018
Dr. Diamond passed away peacefully, in his home, at age 100, surrounded by family. He was born in the Bronx, borough of New York City, New York.
He served as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps in the European Theatre prior to, and during WWII. Dr. Diamond received his medical training in pediatrics, with a specialty in neonatology, and graduated from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in London, England.
Dr. Diamond came to Bakersfield in 1980 to chair the Department of Pediatrics at Kern Medical Center. Since arrival, he was continually involved with children as a child abuse expert and advocate, working closely with the Kern County District Attorney's Office and the Jamison Children's Center. He gave lectures at both the California State University and Bakersfield College Schools of Nursing, regarding child abuse. Also, Dr. Diamond presented instructional seminars on AIDS to the teachers of the Bakersfield City School District.
During Dr. Diamond's career, he has received many professional awards, including the establishment of the Jess Diamond Child Assessment Center as a sub-department of the Jamison Children's Center. In 2003 he received the very prestigious Hillel Award, which honors service to the community, from Temple Beth El.
He married the love of this life, Ann, and they recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on June 20, 2018. Dr. Diamond is survived by his wife, Ann; his three children, Jayne, Steven, and Donna, and their spouses; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was a lifetime member of the Masons Perfect Square Lodge #204.
He and Ann enjoyed traveling abroad, and spending time with family and friends. Dr. Diamond had a most flamboyant, colorful, well-coordinated wardrobe which sometimes presented a whimsical distraction in some judges' courtrooms.

I grew up in the Bronx NY. I was born in 1950. My memories of Dr Diamond coming to my apartment to make a house call with his little black bag. We lived off the Grand Concourse on Grant Avenue. It is so difficult to imagine in this day and age any doctor doing that.
What an amazing man he was.
I grew up, now 75 years old and a retired RN.
He was an incredible person and physician.

Dr. Diamond was my brother's and my beloved pediatrician for many years. He was a gentle soul who was a tireless advocate for children, was kind and gentle, worked very long hours, made house calls and was never too busy to talk and console. Since i had chronic otitis, my parents and i often made the trip across the Concourse to his office, across the street from the "other" flatiron building. His influence on my life was profound. After being accepting into Einstein College of Medicine - class of '79, i decided to pursue either pediatrics or child psychiatry, largely due to the influence Dr. Diamond had on my life. I ultimately chose Child Psychiatry and continue to practice to this day. He was a wonderful human being and one of my regrets is not having kept in contact with him through the years. I know he would have been proud. I am deeply saddened to learn of his passing but eternally grateful to have had him in my life at such a critical time. Written with love, gratitude and deep respect. My mother spoke often of Dr. Diamond, my pediatrician on the Grand Concourse. He had telephone call in hour once daily. He advised her to feed the baby beef juice. What's beef juice? You roast the beef and put the beef on mashed potatoes to give the baby some iron. His solution for hiccups was to give the baby a teaspoon of boiled water. When she reported back that the baby had stopped hiccoughing by the time the boiled water was prepared, he said, "Worked, didn't it?"

He had a never ending smile, was an impeccible dresser (giving ALL the credit to his wife), a jovial personality as well as being the most genuine & sincere person I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He will be missed.
