Joanne Galbraith Obituary

JOANNE GALBRAITH

November 25, 2024

Joanne galloped into horse trainer's heaven on November 25, 2024, leaving behind a legacy as vibrant and spirited as the horses she so dearly loved. At 86, Joanne's life was a testament to her passion for horses and her unwavering dedication to the equestrian community. Her journey began in the sun-drenched hills and orange groves of east Bakersfield, where she, her friends and her sisters would ride for hours, their mischievous laughter echoing through the countryside.

From a young age, Joanne's talent and love for horses were undeniable. She became a Professional Trick Rider, captivating audiences at RCA rodeos with her daring feats and graceful horsemanship. Her competitive spirit shone brightly throughout her life as she participated in numerous horse events, earning admiration and respect from her peers. Joanne's expertise in Team Penning, Ranch events and Gymkhanas was unparalleled, and she was a proud member of various horse associations, including GRA, KCGA, CGA, CSHA, WTPA, PCQHA, and AQHA. Among her many achievements was qualifying multiple and placing well in the AQHA World Show in Pole Bending, a testament to her skill and dedication. Joanne's knowledge and successes of horse training was recognized well beyond the arena; as she was interviewed and published in several magazines among them was the "Western Horseman" and "Bakersfield Tuff."

Joanne's influence extended beyond the arena. Her knowledge and passion for horses were shared generously with the Bakersfield horse community. She was a beloved mentor, passing on her wisdom to her children and countless other horse enthusiasts in Kern County and beyond. Joanne's home was a haven for young rodeo competitors, where she played the role of surrogate Rodeo Mom, offering guidance, support, and a warm meal to all who needed it. Her candid advice, often delivered with a twinkle in her eye, using an idiom like "How the cow ate the cabbage" was her way of setting things straight.

Her open heart and open-door policy meant that Joanne never met a stranger. She was always ready to lend a helping hand, her kindness and generosity leaving an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. Her bold and sassy spirit was infectious, and her memory will forever be cherished by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Joanne was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 39 years, Dale Galbraith, her son Robert Harms, and her parents, Red and Jo Graham. She is survived by her siblings: Donna Graham, Rusty Graham, and Linda Nelson. Her children: Curtis Harms, Johanna and her husband Paul Ritter, Richard Harms, Belinda Harms, and Anna Rippy. Her grandchildren: Erica Harms, Blair Ritter, Tamarra Harms, Brandon Stricklin, Jessica Harms, and Nicholas Harms. Her great-grandchildren: Karsyn Watts, Asher Heiden, Peyton Hooven, and so many more family and friends who were touched by her love and spirit.

Special thanks go to those who stood by Joanne in her final days, offering their unwavering support and love: Janet Shelton, Linda Snap, Claudia Payne and Pricilla Roberson. Your kindness will never be forgotten.

In true Joanne fashion, her family invites all who knew her to her "Celebration of Life" when the weather warms up, as Joanne was never fond of the cold. Belinda will coordinate her "Going Away Party," ensuring it is a fitting tribute to a woman who loved a good party and lived life to the fullest.

Joanne's legacy will continue to inspire generations, her life a vibrant tapestry of love, laughter, and unyielding passion for the things she held dear. Her spirit will forever ride alongside those she loved, a guiding light in the hearts of all who knew her.

I will never forget that summer I stayed the night with Aunt Joanne when I was a kid,
and how the next day, in her supportive and sassy way, she helped me overcome my fear of riding a horse I didn´t know. She is dearly missed and is definitely having one heck of a party in Heaven!

To the family and friends of Joanne, especially Johanna, Paul and Blair, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
It was always a pleasure to spend some time with this special lady when she visited her West Virginia family. She was in our church services in August and we were so happy to have her with us.
We extend our deepest sympathy and love to each of you during these sad days.

I am so sorry to hear of Joanne's passing - actually was hoping to see her tonight at a Back Country Horseman event. I met Joanne many years ago at the old fairgrounds where we practiced gymkhana every weekend, then later on at team penning events. She knew so much about horses and was fun to be around. Hope to hear many stories from others who knew her at her Celebration of Life!
