June Canning Obituary

OLIVE JUNE CANNING

August 29, 1926 – May 5, 2025

June Canning was born August 29, 1926 and passed away on May 5, 2025 at her home in Bakersfield, CA.

June was born in San Diego, CA to her parents, Fred and Sybble (Padgett) Oyer, and spent her childhood years there. June graduated with honors and was a California Scholarship Federation Seal Bearer from San Diego High School in 1945. She then attended college at the University of California at Los Angeles, where she was very active in Kappa Delta Sorority life. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Bacteriology in 1949. During a summer college trip to the Grand Canyon she met her future husband, John Canning.

Upon her graduation from UCLA, John and June married in San Diego on July 22, 1950. The couple soon moved to Bakersfield, where they settled and began raising their family. Over the course of the years, they enjoyed summer vacations in such places as Yosemite, Crater Lake, the Grand Canyon and Lake Mead. One of their favorite camping locations along the California coast was at El Capitan State Beach near Santa Barbara.

June is survived by her children Jan Siri (Mike), Jerry Canning, Jeff Canning (Tracy) and Jane Ross (Mike), four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, as well as other loved ones. June was predeceased by John, her loving husband of 71 years.

Her love for family and friends was an inspiration to all who knew her; Mom will always be lovingly remembered by all of us.

The family is eternally grateful to Treesa Devin whose 11 years of extraordinary care exceeded any and all expectations.

Funeral services for June Canning will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Road in Bakersfield, CA. Visitation begins at 8:30 AM, the Chapel service will begin at 9:30, followed by the Graveside service.

I am honored to call June´s son Jerry a dear friend.
Jerry has been a very dedicated loyal and loving son to his parents and after his dad passed away regularly visiting mom making a trip to continue a little Bakersfield about twice a month, not a very pleasant trip. I just hope that my kids are somewhere near as well to their mom and me the way Geri has done. To live a full life and Geri was there to help celebrate and support that life.
Much love to the family and to Jerry at this difficult time.
With love,
Mike D
