Maggie Longest

Maggie Sistrunk Longest passed away peacefully on Oct 28, 2014, surrounded by her family. She was born in Monticello, MS on November 3, 1924. Charles proposed to her shortly after they met while he was a patient at the Naval hospital in San Diego where she was fulfilling her training to become a registered nurse. They were married on June 23, 1946, shortly after she graduated from nursing school. They lived in Hawthorne, CA until moving to Bakersfield in December of 1948. Maggie worked as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital until Memorial Hospital opened in 1956, when she took a position there. She retired from Memorial as Head Nurse of Surgery in 1986.
Dearly loved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Maggie was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years and her 8 siblings. She leaves behind three children: Cheri and Kenneth Wall of Bakersfield; Charles Jr. and Deb Longest of Washington, IA; and Frank and Bobbie Longest of North Hills, CA. Maggie will also be missed by her 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was always the glue that held us together.
Graveside services will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery (3700 River Blvd) on Monday, November 3, at 2:00 PM.
