Maria Ruiz Obituary

Maria Cruz Ruiz 1925 - 2010 Our Mother, Grandmother, Godmother and Aunt Cruz passed peacefully from this life with her family at her side on Thursday, October 28, 2010, at the age of 85. Born in Waterloo, Iowa, on May 3, 1925, to Maria Mendez and Pedro Gomez, Maria was raised by her Aunt Belen and Thomas Rodriguez, along with her sisters, Peggy Caballero, Mary Hughes, Mary Lucero, Helen Lomas; and brother, Joe Montez. Maria was very close with her brother and sisters, creating strong family ties. Maria was devoted to her family. She married the love of her life, Natividad L. Ruiz, in 1942, prior to him leaving to WWII. Together they raised seven wonderful children. Maria retired from Mike Yurosek and Sons in 1995, where she was employed for 20+ years as a production supervisor and, finally, as an administrative assistant. She volunteered over the past 15 years for various organizations, including MAOF, Clinica Sierra Vista, and most recently with the Head Start Foster Grandparent Program as a teacher's assistant. She was a role model with a strong work ethic with high expectations. She had the ability to share her knowledge and build strong bonds with those she worked with. She was an ambitious individual, always pushing herself. With pomp and circumstance, she obtained her high school diploma in 1983 to show her family you can do anything you set your mind to. Maria was loved dearly by her children and grandchildren. She was endeared by a number of nieces, nephews, and a large extended family she felt blessed to be a part of. Maria was always willing to host family gatherings that created warm memories we will always cherish. Maria leaves behind her daughters, Frances and husband, Isadore Suarez, Lorraine Ruiz, and Lydia Klein; her sons, Nate Jr. and wife Dolores Ruiz, Pete and wife Gloria Ruiz, Robert and wife Lupe Ruiz, and Edward and wife Natalie Ruiz; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Natividad L. Ruiz, in 1974 and her daughter, Sally Ann Ruiz, in 1952. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., with Recitation of the Rosary at 6:00 p.m., at Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Chapel, 2739 Panama Lane. A Mass to celebrate the life of Maria Cruz Ruiz will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Francis Church, 900 "H" Street. To all my cousins, my prayers and thoughts go out to all of you. I'm sorry I couldn't have been there. I have so many fond memories of my Aunt Cruz. I can recall all the family get togethers at my Uncle Nate's and Aunt Cruz's house on "L" St. those were great times growing up, with my Mom & Dad, my Aunt Mary & Uncle Henry, Uncle Joe Mendez, Uncle Larry, Bobby & Ester, and my Nina Veva, and all my cousins. Those memories I will always hold dear. Love you all....

Compadres Robert and Lupe,
We were so fortunate to have been a part of "Grandma's" life because of you two. You always included us in family gatherings and we know in our hearts that she thought of us as family. We are so sad to see her leave us but, we know that she is now with the love of her life, your dad. She always spoke of him as if it were yesterday, she would tear up, wipe her eyes and smile, speaking of him with such love. We will always remember her for her high spirit and take charge ways, not to mention her famous salsa. She was one of a kind, that's for sure.
To the Ruiz family, our deepest, heartfelt prayers are with all of you.
Compadres Mike and Toni
