MARY GEHERTY Obituary

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and a good friend went to be with the Lord on October 10, 2016.
Mary was born in Taft, Ca. to Mary Elma Berry and John Philip Ransome Minner. Mary lived in Taft along with her Mother and 3 brothers. She attended the Taft schools until graduating from Taft High School in 1953. Mary studied business and enjoyed working with numbers (Accounting). In July of 1953, Mary met the love of her life William E. Geherty and they married. This same year she went with her husband to Fort Hood, Texas while he served in the Army during the Korean War. While in Texas, Mary gave birth to her first daughter. In 1955 after her husband Bill had completed his service for our country, they, along with their daughter, returned to Taft, Ca. Over the next several years Mary gave birth to another daughter and two boys. Mary was a member of the Nazarene church in Taft and was involved with the choir as well as other church activities including being a Sunday school teacher. Mary was a substitute teacher as needed in the Taft elementary school system. In 1970, Mary began her employment with Kern County beginning with the Parks and Recreation department - Accounting. Several years later she transferred over to the Kern County Fire Department and loved her employment there. Many times she would talk about her work there and "that is was her second family". She and William raised their family in Taft until 1973 when they moved to Bakersfield, Ca. Mary retired from the Kern County Fire Department in 1996 and moved to their mountain property at Pine Flat Lake. This is where they would spend their retirement lives together.
Mary along with her husband of 54 years enjoyed their gambling trips to Las Vegas, church activities, NASCAR racing, family gatherings, cooking and providing for her family. She will be missed dearly.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband William E. Geherty, both parents, three brothers (Skip, Burt and Phillip), Great Grandson (Dylan Lindquist).
Mary leaves her four children (Elaine, Diana, Michael, and Steven) along with sister-in-laws (Marianne, Tina, Joyce, Barbara, and Carol), brother-in-laws (Bob and David), daughter-in-laws (Gabrielle and Elaine) nine grandchildren, 10 great-grand children, one great-great-grandchild and several close family friends.
All are welcome to a celebration of Mary's life at Grace Baptist Church November 5, 2016, at 10:30 am. Grace Baptist church is located at 2550 Jewetta Ave. Bakersfield, Ca 93312
