Mattie Martha McGee was born June 3, 1922, to Sydney and Ella Carstarphen at Cove, Arkansas. She was the youngest of their four children. On June 10, Mattie peacefully went home, with her family near her side. Mattie grew up on her parents' farm near Durant, Oklahoma. She would often recall her love of the farm and the woods and her horse, "Molly." She studied music at Southeastern Oklahoma State. In 1944 she married a returning Pacific War veteran, the late William L. McGee, in Hugo, Oklahoma.
Mattie was preceded in death by her daughter, Gloria Bemke (Tom), and grandson, Timothy (Bemke). She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Pamela Hammond (Jody); sons, William (Denise), Kenneth (Paula); eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Mattie retired in 1985 from the United States Postal Service after 30 years of service. In retirement, she enjoyed music, growing flowers, and the company of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be buried next to her brother, Paul Carstarphen (sister-in-law Alta Carstarphen is 94) to no doubt continue their friendly discussion on who really grew the best tomatoes. The family is grateful for the kindness and help of Dr. Nadim Sarkies and his staff, especially Megan, who always had a friendly hug, and the kind and caring people at Jasmine Gardens Residential Care.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 19, from 4-8 p.m. at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 3700 River Blvd., with a graveside service on Monday, June 20, at 10 a.m. For condolences please visit: www.greenlawnm-c.com Greenlawn Funeral Home
