Paul Torres Obituary

PAUL EDWARD TORRES

September 23, 1948 – July 5, 2024

Bakersfield – Paul Edward Torres was born on September 23, 1948, in Bakersfield, California to parents, Tino M. Torres and Lillie Torres. He left this world unexpectedly on July 5, 2024. Paul attended East Bakersfield High School while proudly representing the Blades in track and field, excelling in the discus throw. After graduating from East High in 1966, Paul followed in his father's footsteps to pursue a career in law enforcement and received an A.A. degree in Police Science at Bakersfield College. While working for the Campus Police, he continued his education at California State University, Los Angeles, earning a bachelor's degree in Police Science in 1970.

In 1971, Paul began his professional career in law enforcement as a police officer at the Monterey Park Police Department. Paul honorably served in the California Army National Guard Reserves for six years in the Company A 132d Engineer Battalion while earning his Sharpshooter Army Badge. Paul was an ambitious runner and continued to be throughout his adult life, participating in numerous marathons within California and abroad. In 1994, he became involved with the Baker to Vegas Run, recruiting officers from MPPD and various smaller police departments to form several qualifying teams to compete in the 300-category run. Under Paul's leadership and coordination, the teams held the course record for the "99" Division for three years.

In 2002, Paul retired as a Lieutenant at MPPD after 32 years of proud service and dedication. Shortly after retirement, he moved back to Bakersfield to enjoy his life with his wife, Gloria and family, traveling throughout the country and worldwide. His happiest moments were spent supporting his grandchildren during their academic and athletic activities as a proud "Papa".

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Tino M. Torres and Lillie Torres Morin. He is survived by Gloria, his loving wife of 21 years; stepdaughter Stacy Fogle; stepson Tyler Gardea (Ashley); grandchildren: Addisen, Reagan, and Jaxon Fogle, Londyn and Kain Gardea, Tristan and Kennity Hedlund; sister Rosalie Rocha (Paul); brother Louie Torres (Diana); many nieces and nephews; and a host of long-time friends.

Memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. at Greenlawn Funeral Home SW, 2739 Panama Lane, Bakersfield, CA 93313. Following the memorial service will be a graveside service at 10:30 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, CA 93306.

My condolences to Paul's family & friends. I had the honor of Paul's friendship for more than 35 years. I also had the privilege to work with him in his many ranks within MPPD & as Baker to Vegas Running Team Captain; his leadership skills were superior. I will miss his smile & kind heart. RIP my friend.

My condolences to Paul's family, and may he rest in peace. I have fond memories of working with Paul. We seemed to end up working together on some of the most difficult and challenging cases of my career. His wisdom and professionalism added major contributions in those situations. He was a true asset to me and to the MPPD.
