Robert Alvarado Obituary

ROBERT CERVANTES ALVARADO

June 28, 1931 – October 6, 2025

Robert Cervantes Alvarado, 94, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025, at his home in Bakersfield, California, with his long-time pet Duchess close by.

Born on June 28, 1931, in Douglas, Arizona, to Evaristo and Maria de Jesus Alvarado, Robert was the eighth of ten children. Known affectionately as "Bomba," he roamed the fields of Douglas with a free spirit – riding burros, visiting relatives, and even crossing into Mexico for haircuts and meals at his Tía's house. Despite the hardships, he held deep affection for his hometown and the memories it gave him.

As a teenager, Robert's family relocated to Bakersfield, where he met the love of his life, Ramona "Monie" Urrea, in junior high school. He attended Garces High School in 1947, becoming its first quarterback and participating in baseball and basketball. Though he left school after one year to begin working, his passion for sports endured - he later volunteered to serve as baseball coach for summer adult leagues.

Robert and Monie married in 1951 and shared 69 beautiful years together until her passing in 2021. Robert was a man of deep faith, often reminding his family that "God is good and forgives." His strength in the face of adversity was a guiding light to those around him. He worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for 40 years, rising to foreman of a steel gang – a role in which he was respected for his empathy, leadership, and work ethic.

The Alvarado home on Sterling Road became a cherished family gathering place, filled with music, laughter, games, and unforgettable food. Robert loved a good party and dancing with his Monie. He welcomed everyone with warmth and humor, turning strangers into friends with ease. His wit and love for teasing brought joy to his family, and his passion for the Dodgers and Lakers made game days a celebration. He was much loved and will be greatly missed.

Robert is survived by his daughters, daughter-in-law, and their spouses: Audrey (Katie Loughary) Alvarado, Margaret "Peggi" (George) Alvarez, Sonya (Frank) Dorado, and Valorie Alvarado; his grandchildren: Natalie (Tommy) Garcia, Christian (Vicki) Alvarez, Nicole Alvarado, Timmy Alvarez, Frank (Keesha) Dorado, Robby (Kristin) Alvarado, Traci Alvarez, Janine Dorado, Ron Pete (Lisa) Alvarado, Noah Alvarez, and Angel (Pepe) Rodriguez; 23 great-grandchildren, and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and godchildren. He is also survived by his sister Lucy (Balde) Hernandez, sister-in-laws Angie Alvarado, Sarah Alvarado, and brother-in-law George Medina.

Robert was preceded in death by his loving wife Monie, his son Robert "Bobby" Alvarado, great-granddaughters Janessa Battle and Adeline Rodriguez.

A viewing and rosary will be held on Monday, October 20, 2025, from 5:00-8:00pm at Grace Assembly of God, 2800 Larson Lane, Bakersfield, Mass on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at 10:00am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 601 E. California Ave, Bakersfield. Burial services will follow at Hillcrest Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Road. A celebration of life will follow at Elks Lodge, 1616 30th Street, where stories, laughter, and love will honor Robert's legacy.
