What a dash she lived
Roberta (Bert) was born on November 16, 1940 in Los Angeles, California to parents Mary Ingram Palladino and Robert Palladino. She came to Bakersfield in 1946 and attended Longfellow Elementary School, Washington Junior High School and East Bakersfield High School where she met her high school sweetheart and future husband, Owen McCarthy, who passed in 2000. She found love a second time with Michael Zablan.
Bert was instrumental in the Anti-Graffiti Program for the County of Kern. She also volunteered for many charities in our community - the majority related to helping patients and families combat cancer and overcome financial difficulties related to treatments. Bert never met a stranger and always had time and prayers for each new friend.
Bert is survived by daughter, Michelle McCarthy; sons and daughters-in-law Mark and Monica McCarthy and Kevin and Judy McCarthy; beloved grandchildren Zachary McCarthy, Connor and Emily McCarthy and Meghan McCarthy; Michael Zablan; sister Sharon Lackie; sister and brother-in-law Geri and Gary Westad; brother and sister-in-law Jay and Judy Palladino; sister-in-law Debbi McCarthy; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marge and Ed Smith; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog Mia.
Bert passed peacefully on March 3, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to CBCC Foundation for Community Wellness, Inc. ATTN: Finance 6501 Truxtun Ave Bakersfield, CA 93309. Tell them your friend Bert sent you.
Celebration of Life: Friday, March 15, 2024, at 12:00 noon, at Valley Baptist Church, 4800 Fruitvale Ave., Bakersfield, California.

Bert was such a love. She was my boss in the 90´s and she became my dear friend. She treated me like one of her own. Rest is peace and power with our Lord Jesus, Bert. You are so loved by so many.

One of my favorite memories of Bert was a trip to Lake Tahoe. It was snowing, almost a white out. I rememberer Kevin and my daughters, Kim and Christy going up the mountain to ski. It was near Thanksgiving and fortunately they had packed a cooler with leftovers and water. The snow kept falling and an avalance prevented them from returning to the motel. Bert and Owen, and my wife Geri (Bert's younger sister) called the hospitals, sherrifs department, etc. trying to determine if there had been an accident. In desperation, I went to the bar and learned of the avalance. Fortunately, the kids were escourted through the avalance and returned to the motel. A most memorible Thanksgiveing to say the least!
