John McCarthy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Par-Troy Funeral Home on Feb. 18, 2026.
John Jacob McCarthy, 93, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026, just days shy of his 94th birthday.

John was born on February 28, 1932, in Queens, New York, to George F. McCarthy and Amelia (née Koch) McCarthy. He was raised in Brooklyn, New York, where he spent his childhood and formative years, graduating from high school before beginning a long and dedicated career.

Following high school, John held an accomplished career as a field serviceman for Varityper Industries. Later in his life he moved into the bus driver industry for Hanover Township, a position he held with pride and commitment for many years. He was known for his strong work ethic, steady presence, and the kindness he showed to those he encountered along his routes.

John married the love of his life, Ann F. Sangiovanni. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, and devotion. They raised three children: Timothy, John, and Kara. John was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who found his greatest joy in the company of his family.

John was a passionate athlete and someone who excelled in almost anything he found an interest in. At 23 years old, already earning a place as a class A speed skater on the East Coast, he won the prestigious Silver Skates awards in the 500 meters. He qualified for the pre-trials of the 1960 Olympic team in the 500 meters, just missing qualification time for the trials. All the while, John became a competitive road and track racer on the bike. As an older athlete, he won awards at the Senior Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, earning first place in his age bracket. Remarkably at 77, he competed in the 5-borough road race in New York City. Even though he first mocked bowling as being not a tough enough athletic sport, he learned to really like it and earned himself three 300 games and one 299 game as well.

John will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering dedication to his family, and the steady example he set for all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished so deeply.

He was predeceased by his parents, George F. McCarthy and Amelia (née Koch) McCarthy, and by his beloved granddaughter, Kaydee Alexander.

John is survived by his devoted wife, Ann F. McCarthy; his sons, Timothy McCarthy and John A. McCarthy and his wife Carol; his daughter, Kara McCarthy; his sisters, Patricia Steach and Susan Ward; his grandchildren, Sarah, Levi, Seth, and Brian; and his great-grandchild, Kayden Harrigan.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Friday, February 20, 2026, from 6:00 -9:00 p.m. at Par Troy Funeral Home. 95 Parsippany Rd., Parsippany. Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Ann R.C. Church on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 10:00am. Internment: Restland Memorial Park.
