Serrill Brooks Obituary

Serrill H. Brooks
September 16, 1918 - January 16, 2018

Serrill H. Brooks was born in Newmansville, PA. As a youth, he longed to be a Doctor. But his family did not have the money to send him to medical school. Instead they sent him to work for and learn from a Doctor in a nearby community. What he learned not only led him to a lifelong curiosity about health and well-being, but secured his position as a Medical Corpsman in the Air Force. Eventually he was stationed at Minter Field in Shafter. It was while on leave and headed to a dance at the Eagles Lodge in Bakersfield that he met the love of his life, Marguerite Miller. They were both headed to the dance on the same bus. And when the bus lurched, Serrill literally fell into Marguerite's lap. They were married for 65 years. During that time they traveled the USA and shared their "slideshows" with family and friends on a regular basis. Both worked for Pacific Bell for more than 30 years, and were active members of the Telephone Pioneers. During his time with "MaBell" Serrill helped design and deploy several central offices. If you have made a landline or cell phone call in Bakersfield, it is because Serrill helped build the system to send those calls. Serrill loved to fix things. He was a "rock hound" and made beautiful jewelry from the stones he polished. He also had a love for timepieces of every sort. He had a workshop full of rocks and clocks in various stages of repair. Serrill came from a small family, but Marguerite did not. Along with her, he enjoyed family barbecues, bingo, Pinochle, picnics in the park with anyone and everyone. During his 99 years, he saw the invention of the toaster, hairdryer, cell phones, personal computers, the internet, color television, digital watches and so many other things. Serrill passed away peacefully in the home that he built with his own hands and where he had lived for 65 Years. Serrill is preceded in death by many friends and family members including his parents and his beloved Marguerite. He leaves behind his sister in law Maxine Miller. Many nieces and nephews around the country. Tilly his friend of many years. His "family" at Milts and The Sugar Mill restaurants. The family would like to thank Hoffman Hospice and Interim Healthcare. And especially to thank Samantha, Michelle, Marlyn and Jean for their loving care.

A celebration of life will be held at 10am on Thursday January 25th with viewing from 9-10am at Greenlawn Funeral Home at 3700 River Blvd. In lieu of flowers his family suggests that you support the charity of your choice.

Rest in Peace

Linda Hazen

January 21, 2018

Over the 30 years of living close to Milts we met the Brooks several times at the Counter eating a meal . Myself being a rock hound we had great conversations . When Mrs. Passed we were both devastated for Serrill . They had a great life and I can't say I'm sad . I'm happy they have reunited ! May they be Dancing in Paradise once again .
