STEVEN ARTHUR VARNER

July 23, 1954 July 13, 2023

Bakersfield Steven A. Varner, 68, passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at his home in Bakersfield, California after a 55-year battle with lupus-related kidney disease. He was born on July 23, 1954 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Jim and Alice Varner. After graduating from Bakersfield High School and attending Bakersfield College, he was a pressman at Sierra Printers for twenty years, retiring in 1994.

Following a kidney transplant on Thanksgiving Day 1999, he moved to Houston, Texas, where he indulged his love of golf at Northgate Country Club. As his physical condition declined, he began playing bridge and was a Silver Life Master. He loved not only the game, but the people he met through it.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Brenda, two daughters and their families Jana and David Weber and grandchildren William and Claire of West Hills, CA, and Lisa Mosley and daughter Taylor of Columbus, Ohio. Also surviving are his sister Skeet Ortega and nephew Steve Emmons, both of Bakersfield; sisters-in-law Barbara Hvoschinsky of Redwood Shores, CA, and Kay Bolinger of Leland, MI, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

At Steve's request, no services will be held. The family wishes to express its gratitude to Dr. Harold J. Baer for forty-plus years of excellent care, and to Hoffmann Hospice for being there when we needed help the most.

I am so saddened at Steve's passing. He was remarkably courageous battling his illnesses for so many years. It was my privilege to have been his physician.

My memories as does Joe's memories run deep. I remember taking his, later to be mine, 1976 TR-7 to famosa to a driving school to teach him how to shift and do maneuvers that only kids would do today. I think of Steve and Brenda often when I go through bakersfield, so so sorry for your loss.

Dear Brenda, Lisa, and Jana,
Maria and I are so very sorry for your loss. Nothing can fill this hole in all of our hearts. Steve was a good husband, a caring father, and a great friend, and still so much more for everyone who knew him.
Steve, it was great having you in my life. Thank you for being my friend.

Steve's family lived across the street from us in the Teakwood Track in Bakersfield, Ca. We played together all the time. He was a great friend, sorry that I had lost contact with him. So sorry for his family, he was a very special person. Cathey Hughes Smith
