Theodore Maniates Obituary

THEODORE "TED" GUS MANIATES

November 2, 1931 – June 2, 2024

Theodore (Ted) Gus Maniates, 92, passed away peacefully on June 2 nd , The son of Gus and Irene Maniates was born and raised in Bakersfield, California and graduated from Bakersfield High School. Upon graduation, he then entered College in Grants Pass, OR which he abruptly left to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corp. where he fought honorably for 3 years as an infantry Marine during the Korean War. When the conflict in Korea ended, he returned to Bakersfield, met and married his wife Brenda and started a family. Together they owned and operated Pete's Mt. Vernon Liquors on Edison Hwy until its sale in the early 70's. He then went on to become liquor manager of Skaggs Drug Store, where he became and remained liquor Manager from opening day on Mt. Vernon Avenue, throughout the transitions of Skaggs, Osco/Sav-On and Longs Drugs until his retirement.

Ted was a lifelong member and past president of St. George Greek Orthodox Church as well as a lifetime member of the Order of AHEPA. He enjoyed the people of Bakersfield and was well known throughout the local community. He often sought refuge from the Bakersfield heat at the family cabin in Lake Tahoe, where he would fish, relax and enjoy the entertainment provided by casinos. Ted could often be found socializing and placing bets on the ponies at local simulcast wagering locations, as this was his favorite hobby. He will be remembered mostly for his hearty laugh, his zest for life, his deep love of his family and his strong will. Ted remained a proud Marine veteran of the Korean War and lived his life with the same strong honor and pride.

Ted was preceded in death by his sister Laura Maniates, and his loving wife Brenda, of 57 years. Ted is survived by his 3 children Alexandra Wimbish Wilbanks (Dennis), Ted Jr (Trina Villegas) and Stephanie Migias (George), along with grandchildren, Krista Wimbish Pedersen, Nick and Ryan Wilbanks, Marios, Dimitra and Anastasia Migias.

The family would like to thank Liz Rodgers and the staff at Kern River Transitional Care for their care, support and especially their much - needed patience, throughout his stay. A Trisagion Service, (Viewing) will be held June 17 th at 6:30pm and Funeral, June 18th at 11am, both at St. George Orthodox Church, 401 Truxtun Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church or Honor Flight Kern County.

I met Ted in 1986. When I got hired on as Savon/Osco drugs, he worked over in the liquor department pretty much all by himself. I remember how he would always make deals with the customers that probably was against store policy. Lol. Ted and I became pretty good friends over the years. He was a fantastic guy and always in a good mood and had a very distinct laugh. loved to go to the fairgrounds and bet on the horses. I was very happy that I had opportunity to see him a couple of times while he was living in the facility before his passing. I wanted to go see him more but just never got around to it. But I´m glad I got to see him the times that I did. RIP with your peanut M&Ms.

Remembering your dad's harty laughter and big smile. Most of all, I remember you as the care giver to your mom and dad in their senior years as they declined. They could not have had a better and more loving daughter. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.
