Walter Hopkins Obituary

Walter Francis Hopkins July 13, 1932 - September 27, 2011 Ex-marine and retired business man, Walter Francis Hopkins, passed away in the loving arms of his wife of fifty-three years, Helvethia Yetta Hopkins, at his home in Bakersfield, CA on September 27, 2011. He will be greatly missed by his wife Helvethia, daughter Julie Hopkins, son-in-law David Faulkner, and all of the many people whom Walter's presence touched their hearts. As a young man Walter enlisted in the marines to serve his country in the Korean War from August 15, 1951 to December 31, 1952. He received a Purple Heart and was discharged from services with the Unites States Marines with recognition from Mamie Eisenhower the wife of President Eisenhower. During the period of recovery after the war Walter met Helvethia at the Brooklyn Veterans Administration Hospital where she was employed as a Dietician. He married Helvethia in 1958 and they had their daughter Julie in 1960. Walter went on to acquire an MBA from Fairleigh Dickenson University and applied his degree to a career as a business man in New York City and later in Bakersfield. Walter was a lover of the sea enjoying visits to Puerto Rico where he spent time with his wife's Puerto Rican family. He was often seen skin-diving and swimming, two of his many athletic activities besides golfing and skiing, off of the coasts of New York and Puerto Rico. Walter was a man who never stopped giving. Always ready to help out his friends and family, And, as an avid reader, he often gave books to those he thought would enjoy a good read. He will remain in the hearts of his surviving loved ones. His daughter Julie will miss his continuous advice and mentoring support. A viewing will be held for Walter on Sunday, October 2nd, at the Cherished Memories Memorial Chapel from 1:00 to 6:00pm. The funeral ceremony will take place at the Bakersfield National Cemetery at 10:00am on Monday, October 3, 2011. www.bakersfield.com/obits

Hi Julie:

I was looking casually at the Facebook notifications after our short chat yesterday, and discovered that your dad had passed away.

I had no idea.

I would like to convey to you my deepest sympathy on your loss. I read the obituary. He was a wonderful, modest accomplished generous person.

I would hear you often talk about visiting him. I remember you driving from the last Le Tip's December party late at night for a visit.

You were indeed a caring and loving daughter.

I wish for you that the future is healthy and happy and prosperous.

With sincere best wishes,
Philip
