Alexander Jenkins Obituary



Alexander Frederick Jenkins, Jr., devoted husband and father, died peacefully on April 19 th at Symphony Manor in Roland Park. He was 84. The son of the late Alexander F. Jenkins of Baltimore and Helen Albaugh Walker of Frederick County, "Alec" grew up in Guilford. He attended Gilman School and Johns Hopkins University, majoring in electrical engineering. He then moved to California to work for North American Aviation. Alec was a champion of alternative energy resources. Following his work in the aerospace industry, he joined the California Energy Commission, where he worked for 30 years. In the 1990's, he played a principal role in the development and implementation of Solar II, a demonstration project of solar thermal power using molten salt technology - a model for solar power projects in place today. In addition, he co-founded Wind Developers, one of the first initiatives in wind farming in California. While at the Energy Commission, Alec was heavily involved in the Public Interest Energy Research Program (PIER) to advance science and technology in the fields of energy efficiency and related areas. He later served as the Program Manager of the Energy Innovations Small Grant Program. Beloved husband of Carroll Pearre and the late Monica Wadel, Alec is survived by his two children, Alex and Jennifer Jenkins of Sacramento, California, and his step-daughter, Jessica Pratt of Dorchester, New Hampshire. A gravesite service will be held at Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore on Saturday, May 16th at 2:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made to Gilchrist Hospice Care, Inc., 11311 McCormick Rd., Ste. 350, Hunt Valley, MD 21031.
