Allen Walker Obituary

Dr. Allen R. Walker, Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Johns Hopkins Children's Center from 2003 to 2011, died July 16, 2021, at the age of seventy-five.

Allen joined the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at JHC in 1989 after serving in the U.S. Navy as a military base pediatrician for two years and continuing to hone his medical skills as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and The University of Nevada School of Medicine. He then spent several years in private practice to understand all aspects of excellent pediatric care.

In addition to his role as Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Allen became an advocate for children in the state of Maryland becoming a nationally recognized expert in child victimization working closely with MD Child Protective Services and the judicial system to create a safe environment for youth.

Allen was a member of the staff of the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services System from 1995 to 2017 spending much of that tenure as the Associate EMS Director for Pediatrics. His focus was continuous improvement of care and communication among all medical personnel who work with children,

Allen is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara, his daughters, Jessica H. Friedland of Hanover, PA, Meredith L. Walker of Reston, VA; two grandchildren, Kaylyn W. Friedland and Brayden N. Friedland of Hanover, PA and a brother, John L. Walker of San Diego, CA. He was predeceased by his brother, Lawrence G. Walker.

All who worked with Allen recognized his true gift as an educator who always advocated for doing what was in the best interest of the child. No celebration of life is planned at this time to keep everyone safe, but to help Allen continue to influence future pediatricians, gifts in his memory may be made to the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Educational Fund established by the Walker family by sending a check payable to Johns Hopkins Children's Center with a memo indicating that your gift is in memory of Dr. Allen R. Walker. Mail to Johns Hopkins Children's Center, 750 E Pratt St, Suite 1700, Baltimore, MD 21202-3149.

Allen was a wonderful physician and mentor for generations of young doctors and other clinicians in training at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Allen´s example inspired me and other colleagues to pursue a career in our shared field of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. I can recall many long nights with Allen observing his patience, wisdom, willingness to let learners come to their own conclusions while also protecting them from making mistakes, and always making sure that we did the right thing for the patient. Allen was never afraid to take on the most challenging problems when someone needed to step up. He will be missed but always remembered by those he has touched.
