I had the distinct privilege of knowing Carl and Joan Fastow when I worked at Holocaust Museum Houston. Carl was a docent at HMH and our paths crossed often there. I never missed a chance to visit with him and hear what he had to say about this or that. Carl was such a charming and charismatic person. All of us at HMH adored him and looked forward to the days he came in to conduct a group tour for students. I remember a day in which Carl, Joan & "the group (Jack & Shirley Alter and Isabel Mermelstein)" invited me to lunch so we could all watch the Kentucky Derby as we ate our lunch, while cheering on the ponies. I imagine Carl and the group in Heaven playing cards and still cheering on the ponies! I moved from Houston in 2005, but I never forgot about Carl and Joan (and the group), and think of them all so very often.

I worked with Mr. Fastow at Lamar High School. It was a pleasure to know him as a co-worker as well as a friend. I will always remember his courtesy and willingness to talk.

Mr. Fastow made me a better person just knowing him as a colleague at Lamar High School. We were so very lucky when he walked on to the campus. He was kind, dedicated, terrific with the students and an absolute gentleman. He was one of a kind, if we had more people like him the world would be a different place, kinder, smarter and genteel. He was very dear, I was lucky to have known him. I am so sorry for your loss.
