Carvel Tiekert Obituary

Dr. Carvel Tiekert (85) died on Feb.17 at The Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air after a brief illness. He was born in New York City to Norma and Howard Tiekert. Most of his young adult life was spent in Leonia, NJ. Dr. Tiekert received both his BS and Veterinary degrees from Cornell University. After graduation from Veterinary school in 1963, Carvel enlisted in the US Army and was stationed at the Edgewood Arsenal. There he did research for 4 years before leaving the military with the rank of lieutenant. He began work in a mixed animal practice in Connecticut, then purchased the Animal Hospital of Harford County in Bel Air, MD He developed a keen interest in nutrition and alternative medicine during the 1970's. He founded the American Veterinary Holistic Medical Association in 1982 and later received certification in both veterinary acupuncture and chiropractic. He is past president and executive director of the Maryland VMA. He sold his business in 2006 and continued to practice his special brand of Veterinary medicine for the Animal Care Center in Joppa, MD until his death.

Dr Tiekert touched the lives of so many people during his career. He not only treated his animal patients with care and great skill but was always willing to share his vast knowledge of the human condition with anyone who asked for advice. To say he was a unique character is an understatement. His love for life was contagious; his ability to engage people in conversation, infectious! He had philanthropic directives too numerous to mention.

Carvel was a long-time theater goer and with his wife Lorraine adventured to England, Japan and Hawaii where he often lectured. He made colleagues across the world. He spent many a Saturday morning going to yard sales with his "senior" friends. He loved an occasional game of golf and target shooting, but would admit he was accomplished at neither sport.

Carvel is survived by his brothers Bruce from Abingdon, MD and Stewart from New York. He is predeceased by his brother Ronald and his loving wife and Business partner Lorraine.

Dr. Tiekert instructed that no services be held in his honor. Memorials may be made to the Carvel and Lorraine Tiekert Scholarship Fund for the Maryland Veterinary Foundation, P.O. Box 363 Hershey, PA 17033.

Dr. Tiekert was the best man I ever worked for. He taught me the value of hard work, and "do it right the first time." He influenced my teenage years as a father figure after my dad passed away. Dr. Tiekert has always been an influence in my work ethic, and my firm belief in holistic medicine.

Victoria and I have know both Carvel and Lorraine for over 30 years. They were special people with such vast knowledge and interests. Their home and gardens in Abingdon was breathtaking. Such serenity!
Carvel cared for all of dogs over the years. We shared a genuine interest in nutrition and holistic therapies.
He drove down to Takoma Park, MD for our going away party. We invited him in January `24 to come to coastal NC where we had just built our new home. He said he would when he was feeling better.
We called him today only to find out he passed. We will be sorely missed.
Carvel Tiekert was a friend, colleague and he holds a special place in our hearts.

Carvel was one of most interesting and accomplished people I´ve ever known. As friends and colleagues over 30 years we shared our enthusiasm for the fields of nutrition and plant-based therapies.
He cared for our dogs with great compassion. Our dinners with him and Lorraine ( a uniquely intelligent woman ahead of her time) were always filled with robust conversions and laughter.
We last spoke with him in January 2024 and looked forward to seeing him again once he was well. There was no one like Carvel, will really miss him.

My animals always felt so comfortable with this gentle man. I am grieving the loss of him and our conversations. My dog is ill and I feel lost without his guidance

Sadly, I just found out today when trying to make an appointment at his old office, that Dr. Carvel Tiekert has died. So disheartening. He was absolutely a GEM. He helped me with many pets and myself too. No one can compare to a vet or person of his caliber

Dr. Tiekert was a kind, gentle and committed veterinarian. I first met him on the Board of the Maryland Veterinary Medical Association where he served, and brought insights from the Veterinary Medical Association Executives through the American Veterinary Holistic Medical Association which he founded. All those organizations are stronger today because of the path he paved with them. He certainly brought the "organized" into organized veterinary medicine, and he leaves a legacy of the "Gentle Doctor."

I absolutely loved and respected Dr. Tiekert. He saved the lives of two of my most beloved furry friends and I am forever thankful for that. You could not find a better doctor or friend. He will be greatly missed.
