Charles C. J. Carpenter obituary, 1931-2020, Cleveland, OH

Charles Carpenter Obituary

Dr. Charles Colcock Jones Carpenter, Jr., a pioneering medical researcher, is remembered as a mentor to many doctors, an innovator in cholera and HIV/AIDS treatment, and a big-hearted family man. Carpenter was especially passionate about ensuring the fair treatment of all people, especially those unfairly disadvantaged by societal forces.

Carpenter attended medical school at Johns Hopkins, and became a tenured professor at Hopkins, and Physician in Chief at Baltimore City Hospital.

Dr. Carpenter died peacefully at home on March 19, with his wife and sons by his side. He is survived by Sally, his wife of 61 years; his brother, the Reverend Douglas Morrison Carpenter, of Birmingham, Alabama; sisters Ruth Pitts, of Mountain Brook, Alabama, and Alex Cole of Short Hills, New Jersey; sons Charles, of Portland, Maine, Murray and Andrew, both of Belfast, Maine; and seven grandchildren. They suggest donations in his memory to the Immunology Center Patient Assistance Fund at The Miriam Hospital, or the Southern Poverty Law Center. A memorial service will be held later, when public gatherings are more prudent.

I was very fortunate to have worked for Dr Chuck Carpenter as his first project director of the Lifespan/Tufts/Brown Center for AIDS Research between 1999-2002. I had no idea at first that I was working for such a revered physician and global pioneer in infectious disease and HIV treatment. He was incredibly hard working, remarkably fit and active, and he demanded my best. He was 71 years old when I left The Miriam Hospital in Providence and retirement was never on his mind. Although he did not know it, he indirectly launched my own career in overseas relief and development which resulted in my move to the UK for 12 years and a PhD at Oxford. My work has since taken me to over 90 countries and territories - and I owe this rare privilege in part to him. He was also a man of quiet faith, named after his father who was Episcopal bishop of Alabama for 30 years. I myself was ordained 3 years after working for him. He was a truly remarkable man who leaves an extraordinary legacy of contribution to society. May his memory be for blessing.

Dr Carpenter was one of the most welcoming and approachable of colleagues in the Department of Medicine at the Alpert Medical School at Brown University. He championed research and treatment of HIV infection especially of women and prisoners. His life long work to promote better support for health in the Third World is legendary. His legacy is enormous. My heartfelt joy of just knowing him is tinged with the sadness of his family and for the sadness of those innumerable people for whom he strived so strongly to help. God bless you Chuck and all those people you were close to who miss you so much now.

I will speak for all caregivers of Friends In Home Care, in YarmouthMaine. We had the privilege of knowing a kind, respectful, appreciative man.
Our goal was to assist him and his wife to make the best of his last time on this earth, the happiest for him. He was a joy, barely speaking of his life accomplishments. There are not a lot of Men today like him. Darlene

Dr Carpenter came to MIRIAM Hospital In 1986 as an already distinguished and internationally recognized leader in the field of Geographic Medicine which addresses world-wide illnesses and pandemics. He was among the first leaders in the field of Infectious Disease to focus his efforts on HIV infection particularly among women and those in prisons. He quietly but with great purpose helped to make steady progress to combat HIV infection and enlist and train a cohort of physicians and nurses and other health care workers who will continue to carry on his effort and commitment based on his inspirational leadership.

May God comfort you as you live without the physical presence of your loved one. God gave him an incredible life and mission on earth accompanied by his loving and supportive family. I came to know of him through the obituary that I just happened to read. What a "Call" and what a fulfilled life. May the Lord bless all of you. Willa McNeal Birmingham AL

His residents in training referred to him respectfully as the Tall Man. His fierce commitment to the best in medical care for all was always evident in his words and actions. He inspired all around him to be better physicians. Those of us who had the privilege of his mentor ship mourn his passing and recommit to the ideals he embodied.
